Tyre Help Please

Hi

I have a 1968 Dodge Charger (dont know how to resize pics to put it up but u can find it at dodgecharger.com)

I want to get really wide tyres for my car.

I wanted 345 wide tyres but the problem is, I realised the BFG that make them are only 11.6" tread width. On other Hand the dodge viper with 335 tyres (10mm narrower than the 345s) are 12.8" tread width making them 1.2" wider on the concrete.


Im after around a 28" tall tyre (slightly more would be fine) and about 13" tread width.

Street driven... but, want good traction, so even a street drag wheel would be ok if it is soft compound yet drivable in the rain.

Cant find anything on google so please help me out cause I dont know what im looking for exactly.

Sounds like you need to check out Summit and look for some Mickey Thompsons. They make some tall fat tires for street rod and Pro Street applications. Probably just what you need.

I could have sworn that in australia it was spelt "tyres" for the rubber while tired etc was with the I not the Y.

Maybe it isnt and im just living 25 years thinking something that isnt. :banghead:

Can someone explain "tread width and section width"?

If a tyre is 335 section width and 300 tread width

Another tyre is 345 section width and 295 tread width

Which 1 will give more traction?

The bigger section width or tread width? Which is the better tyre (traction wise)?

Tread width is the actual tread face. What hits the ground. Section width is through the middle of the sidewall

So for best traction, section width does not matter?

Eg: 345 section 300 tread... 325 section 315 tread... the 315 tread will provide more traction though section is narrower which then means section is of NO relivance at all, as it does nothing.

I heard from cuda-challenger that side wall makes a tyre bite... so

Side wall thickness + Tread width is ALL that matters, section is irrelivant?

I wouldn't say that. Just look at what a slick does when it hooks up. There is a LOT happening with the sidewall that wouldn't happen with a low aspect ratio tire.

On both tyres in that example, the side wall is of identical height. Meaning the thickness of the tyre is the same. Only difference is 1 is narrower from left-right then the other but has more tread left-right then the other.

Thats what i dont get.

A good example is the 2 tyres I have found

Tyre 1: 15.4" section width, 12.9" tread width, 29" tall on 15" rim.

Tyre 2: 15.0" section width, 13.0" tread width, 29" tall on 15" rim.

So both have the same height side wall, 1 has more tread other has more width

Which of the 2 will give the better traction?
