Unreal Cigarette Prices

Addiction costs - not matter what the currency. Could be $$ or could be mental/physical currency. It’s not worth the cost no matter what it is when we’re talking vice addictions. Cars, hobbies, collections etc, etc - different deal. The vices are poison. I’ve had mine - but I’ve always seem to be able to break the bad ones. Easier said than done......

I tried to smoke when I was younger but I wasn't any good at it.
Practice makes perfect they said.
I practiced. I practiced with regular and menthol. I still couldn't get the hang of it.
When you go into the military, you'll learn to love cigarettes and coffee they said.
34 years later, I have yet to gain an appreciation for smokes or coffee.
I was only in the Army for 3 1/2 months though. Maybe if I was in longer, I may have had better luck.

The wife & I just got back from a trip to the Northeast to sightsee the beautiful fall foliage; White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire is in its peak foliage.

The taxi ride from Boston Logan International Airport to the hotel passed by a corner store with placards in the window advertising cigarette specials:

I asked the taxi cab driver if the $10.25 price was per each pack? No ****, I was shocked to hear the answer. The driver said it is close to $13 per pack in New York City. These numbers are insane!

I guess I lost touch of reality by living in the fly-over zone. I found that Missouri price per pack today is the lowest in the nation @ $5.25 per pack average.

ttps://www.fool.com/investing/general/2014/09/27/the-surprising-cost-of-a-pack-a-day-in-all-50-stat.aspx

There would be no way I could have afforded those numbers when I was a 21 year old heavy drinker and a 3-pack-a-day smoker. I quit smoking 6 years ago on a pack-a-day habit. I remember paying $7.75 then for a 3-pack-special of Marlboro Lights in Missouri. The most I ever paid was $7.75 a pack of smokes 8 years ago at a South Point Casino vending machine in Las Vegas. I remember telling myself I'll never do that again.

I kinda/sorta feel sorry today for the smokers in NYC, Chicago & Boston.…….. just sayin.'

New York City bars used to sell them @ $15 a pack some years back. I have not been in a bad in NYC in a long time. I truly would not be surprised if it was $20 now.

However, currently, you can not smoke in a bar.

DAMN I QUIT SMOKING WHEN THEY WERE .55 CENTS A PACK AND I THOUGHT THAT WAS TOO MUCH

Why just 3 1/2 months?
I have a slight hearing deficiency and my MOS was 13 Bravo.....Field Artillery. They probably figured I would get a LOT worse so they cut their losses! They missed the diagnosis at my intake exam but caught it later when I went in to see a Doc about an ear infection.

Have heard some gas stations selling them one at a time, now that is marketing.

I have a slight hearing deficiency a

Huh?

I worked for a grocery store in the early/mid 1970s and we regularly had Marlboro cigarettes on sale for $2.79 per carton.

I smoked cigarettes, at an early age (14). I remember going on a JH School trip to New York City, in 1971. The damn cigs were 75 cents. I swore then, if they ever got that high in Maryland, I would quit. Well, cigs were $4 a pack, before I quit at age 39. Now I smoke Cigars !!! 2 or 4 a day. And..NO... I do not inhale them..Just a nagging habit. I pay about $175 a month for 120 Cigars... So , not too bad.
Conversely...... I have spent a lot of time in Viet Nam, lately... ALL of the men smoke cigarettes, but none of the women. They pay only $1 a pack, of course their economy is quite different, but the extra tax is not on them. The other thing is, You can smoke , pretty much ANYWHERE.. Hotels, Bars, Restaurants, Stores. They just don't give a damn...LOL. Which is Ok for me, as a Cigar smoker..

I tend to see two sides to this. First, the fact that smoking is bad is irrefutable. You can't get around that.
It's the other side that bothers me. Politicians have targeted tobacco (smokers) by levying high taxes. Their stated reason is to get people to quit and to pay for programs that inform people of the risks. Sounds good. The percentage of people that smoke is down and that's good also. But, my natural mistrust of politicians says that cigarette taxes keep going up because as those people quit, tax revenues go down and it's no secret that the government can't do with less. Smokers are a great source of politically correct targeting.
It's that side that bothers me. GetX't stated that cars, hobbies, etc were a different deal and he is correct, sort of. But, under the banner of "global warming and clean air" we will/are going to be accused of endangering the health of millions with our internal combustion engines. With the push for energy efficiency, hybrid and electric cars, it won't be long before we, the carbon footprint challenged, are the politically correct targets of the great money grab. Fact is, it's already started.

Smoking's fine as long as you know the consequences. But, why someone would choose a little roll of tobacco or marijuana over a healthy lifestyle, is beyond me.

What's funny is people with no money for rent, bills, or groceries, has money for beer, lottery tickets, and cigarettes.

The taxation is insane. Makes me wonder how healthy the black market is for cigarettes. They don't cost much to make...

I remember buying Camels for 75 cents a pack at the gas station just around the corner from the high school early 80s.

I am not even going to jump into this fray at all. I have made my personal opinion on this subject known far too often and have subsequently refrained from it all together. But boy a Fool and their money are always easily parted...Carry On!!! cr8crshr/Tuck:usflag::usflag::usflag:

Lost a few friends to Cancer.

I know when it's near the end because the little BB in the flowmeter is all the way up to the
top of the scale.

They're looking up at me with that look on their face.

I feel helpless because I can't help.

Some people smoke all their lives with no problem. Some don't.

Good luck to all of you! See you on the other side!

I started in 1972 as a 9 year old , smoked until year in 1983 ( when they when up to $2.00 a pack ) never went back ,don't know why ?
