I am restoring the dash right now for my 72 Satellite. The VIN is off the dash for cleaning and repaint. I have new rivets and Chrysler decal coming from ECS for it. Painted the tag flat black. I see so many tags with the raised lettering shiny, not paint color like the rest of the tag. Some people on YT actually lightly sand the tops of the numbers and letters to make them shiny. My 66 year old memory is not too good anymore, but I think when new, the tag was painted black including the raised part of the numbers and letters. Am I wrong?

I believe they were painted black. It's probably just normal wear that rubs off the paint from the vin #.

All black from factory. The shiny digits is over done, people think that's original. It's not.

Pay attention to where the decal is located before you strip the paint off.
Excellent advice. As you can see, I had no choice but to remove it. The rust pits in dash were so deep it took several coats of high build primer with lots sanding between them to fill the pits.

Going back on. They only got shiny from guys rubbing them to clean. Gloss Black vs "dash" Black.
