A bit far in the wayback machine for many here, but “Rhythm of the Rain” by the Cascades in 1963 has always been my favorite instrumental from that era.

That's certainly not an instrumental. I actually bought that 45 back then. "Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain, telling me what a fool I've been, I wish that it would go and let me cry in vain, and let me be alone again" Plus several verses, etc. Good song, though.
