What makes a “Firm Feel” box?

I have a stage 3 Firm Feel box in my 69 and I hate it. I picked it up from a buddy a while back because I needed a box. Whatever they do to alter the level of assist, I’m wondering if it can be undone. It’s not at all hard to steer, I just don’t like it. I’ve driven with it long enough, I miss that “one finger” Chrysler steering. I searched around for a stock box, but can’t find any around here (Phoenix), and I don’t trust parts store reman junk. Any ideas?

I’d trade you, but I’m not close. My stock box is in beautiful shape but definitely over boosted for my liking.

It is power steering, and I want to INCREASE the boost. As I stated, I miss that one finger Mopar steering.

I could do without it as well. I actually prefer no power steering and no power brakes, but it’s an A/C car, and I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a bracket setup that accommodates A/C and no power steering. Were big blocks available with A/C and no power steering in a B-body?

Simple as removing the belt and power steering pump. Might need a few spacers to fill the gap of the missing power steering pump bracket but that’s it.

If it's a Saginaw style pump this is for a ford but same idea.

Those vendors sell used parts. They are professional used parts dealers (Retail). They effectively sell cores.

Have you had LEE rebuild a mopar gear lately?

I talked to someone that worked there a year ago and he said he could rebuild a Borganson gear (Delphi 600? based). Not sure if they will do a mopar one.

He said original owner sold company.

The reaction springs are what give them a firmer feel. I haven’t done it, but you have to crack open the whole unit to get to them. I think mopar action did an article.

I am replacing my stock 74 with a Borgeson unit I got from Bergman Auto. From what I’ve read the Borgeson is much better than the firm feel. I had a firm feel stage 2 in my 68 and I liked it but I’ve read the Borgeson is better. Dick at firm feel doesn’t recommend their stage 3 for street cars. Only racing applications. If you had gotten the stage 2 you probably would be happy but I think you would be happier with the Borgeson unit from Bergman. I'm the same way. I like power in my steering. A stock gearbox with all new parts in the front suspension. Is street driving heaven.

I have a firm feel stage 2 in one car, and a Borgeson box in the other. Borgeson is easier steering, and no center slop.

Interesting, I have a firm feel 2 in my 69 charger with stock pump and firm feel upper control arms , welded Up lowers .
I really like it . No slop I ever noticed.
Sure beets the uncertainty of the over assist I remember from the sixty's.
Made you A hole pucker when diving down narrow city streets with cars parked I both sides . Especially with bias ply tires
Firm feel 3 I understand is more like manual steering.

No, no it is not "simple as" removing the belt.

PS box is WAY more difficult to turn without assist than a manual box.
