What oil pan do I have...

Guys, rebuilt a 70 340 motor that I had and ASSUMED the center pickup oil pan was the original. In ordering a Fel Pro oil pan gasket kit for it the end seals just do not look correct and I am wondering if the pan is from a different year model....any ideas what year I have. thanks..

'67-72 A-Body "A" Engine Oil Pans

We don't have a schematic for the '67-72 A-Body A engine oil pans, but we find that most passenger car oil pans will work in this swap. Stamping #'s are as follows (notice the large interchange):

#394 A,B,C-Body '67-69

#294 A,B,C,E-Body '70-72

#228 A,B,C,E-Body '73-74

NOTE: 273/318/340 oil pans are NOT interchangable with 360 oil pans

AhaaaHaaa, thanks BeepBeep, so I see the 228 was used by a PO to put the 340 in a 73-74 year model. Do you know if the #294 pan was center oil pick up pan also. I assume the early pans would have suspension interference if use on later models...thanks much...

Ok, the Fel Pro gasket kit I used is OS6566C2. As you can see, seems like way too big a gap on the end seal to close up upon bolting the pan down. Went back to my auto part supplier and this part number is all that is available for 70 to 73 340s. The only other listing is for 360 motors. BeepBeep says the 360 pans are not interchangeable with 340s, but do you think that kit may be what s needed. Fel Pro usually has always had the correct fitting gaskets for about anything I have worked on....not sure if and what the issue is....thanks guys...

This is normal. You need to use RTV to seal the corners and edges...

Wow, that seems like a big gap to fill in with RTV. I found an old Victor gasket kit and it had one end seal in it and it was smoothly rolled instead of that sharp 90 degree as with the Fel Pro. I think somebody still makes a better fitting seal for this pan.....just not sure who....thanks all....

Normal. When you install the pan, and tighten the bolts, the seal conforms to the pan, and what gaps that do exist, are sealed by the RTV.
