I ended up getting UMI tubular control arms, they are USA made and allowed me to reuse the coil springs vs. having to buy coil overs. I also bought their front sway bar because the original GM bar was tweaked. While it was apart I replaced inner and outer tie rod ends and upgraded to QA1 billet steel adjusting sleeves.

Once the suspension was done, I pulled the valve covers to paint the as cast portion between the ribs and give them a good polish. The truck was “done” 6 years ago so I pulled the aluminum water pump and chrome brackets off to do a deep clean and polish. I also made a new hard line from the pump to the carb and new trans cooler lines, installed a new trans cooler and fabbed a splash shield to fully seal the radiator to the grille opening.

While the cooling system was empty I took the radiator out to flush out the dead bugs and detritus clogging the fins. It was pretty disgusting. Before putting it back in place I spent a few hours polishing the tanks and catch can.

Friday I wired in a USB port, replaced the incandescent bulbs in the gauges with LED’s and deep cleaned the interior. Tomorrow I’ll pull apart the drivers side door to figure out why the window no longer goes up and down smoothly. The list of minor repairs and improvements is getting shorter, Minnesota winters are pretty long so I’ll just keep chipping away until everything is done. By spring it should be standing tall and ready for another season of cruising…
