the '64 Dodge had a vibration at 40 mph, faster it went away ,slower it went away, if drive steady and let off gas it would go away, either let off it vibrated, if slight on the gas it vibrated. I diagnosed U joints and took it for new joints. beings it is a ball and trunion front joint and none are available, it cost $315.00 with new slip yoke flange in front new U joint in rear. the net gain on that slightly less vibration and reduced to 30 mph area. local shop suggested rear pinion bearing no pinion seal leak.I just had a different center section put in, havn't drove it yet, but I really expect no change. there was nothing wrong with the bearings,in fact probably better than the different center section I installed. is ther anything else that may be the culprit? and even though the drive shaft company said they balanced it,
wondering if plan C would be to take it back to check for re balance . any other clues? I'm to old to crawl around working on the belly of the beast, lucky I can still do a water pump.. that didn't go well either on 4th attempt (383) 3 failures with small leaks but they shouldn't leak at all ,this is new Alum pump housing and pump. all in all not been to much fun with the car-yet.

Might want to mention vehicle specifics here.
If you get the thing up on a lift, try to move the driveshaft up and down at both ends.
I'm betting the culprit makes itself known.

I thought about that as soon as I sent it, a 1964 Dodge 330 with 383/auto trans.later 8-3/4 differential, no tapered axles.

Well, sounds like you checked the obvious. Jack the car up, supporting rear axle and front suspension (level) and check roundness of tires and truness of rims. If ok check pinion angels.

I'm going through the same checked everything except the pinion bearings. Thats this winter.

You think finding this and replacing the wheel would have solved it... nope.

Oh boy...I kept thinking of the sound those old-timey long tree saws made when you shook them!

OK- you mentioned something that I'm suspicious of, to much down pinion angle, I put 4 degree wedges in and it is still to far down. guestimate still over 8 degree's. it appears at some point someone welded the spring perches on and missed the angle big time. I have another housing but dang- I just got this together. I'll see if the carrier was the problem but I'm now thinking you are correct on pinion angle, lot of crap went on under this car. the radical pinion angle also made me thing of the rear U joint worn,
thanks, I will investigate that too. removing the entire rear end easier than putting the punkin in while in the car.
ugh.I need help ,to old and frail to do this work.
