I always wanted a Hemi, but back in the days before Mopar Performance reissued Hemi blocks, what was available out there was a bunch of broken, blown up race parts. There has been a lot of talk about new Hemi blocks being casted again, but as of now I have not seen any new blocks available. I hope we will see another round of new blocks, if not ,the ones that are out there now are going to be very expensive. I would get one now if you are going to build a Hemi from scratch!

I kinda wanted a Hemi when I started my build, but settled for a 440+6 more HP for less $. Still has some "cool factor". I know it's hard to cough up that kind of $ all at once for a hemi, but usually for the average guy it will be cheaper than piecing on together.

There is not doubt that building a second generation Hemi engine, is not for the faint of wallet!

The cost is double what you think, I always wanted one and finally went for it. Aluminum block just under $6k, Stage V rockers and shafts over $3k. The end result is incredible power and every time I see it I wish it was mine... then I remember it is!

I just have to tell this story. About 15 years ago I was at a race at Keystone Raceway Park near Pittsburgh Pa.
A long time friend was racing a 64 Savoy 500'' RB running in the low 10's.While bench racing he said "I want to swap to a Hemi."
Just so happens that Indy Cylinder Heads were there. I knew Russ pretty well and said "Let's go talk to him." Frank told him about his car and what he wanted to do.Russ said "I'll sell you anything you want but I'm telling you, you'll be putting the Wedge back in in no time.Hemi's are a expensive pain in the ***,but if you like to constantly work on your car, go for it." Frank never did buy the Hemi.

My friend has two 472 Hemi engines, and after the Cummins related issues they had (and there were many of them )were sorted out, they have been trouble free. He takes them on Power tours, and road courses. When I bought my Mopar Performance crate Hemi engine in 2005,Comp Cams had sent Cummins a batch of improperly hardened camshafts. My friends second 472 Hemi lunched one of those cams after six hours of run time. It was a new engine, and Cummins rebuilt it under the warranty. My engine may have one of those cams,so I have never run the engine. No one is going to honor the warranty on an engine I bought in 2005,and never ran. I bought new cam and lifters from Indy Cylinder Head, that was matched to run with the mod man intake I bought from them too. I have since changed the direction I was going with the 472,and ordered the 705 horsepower top end kit from Edelbrock, so the whole top end from the 472 Hemi engine, and the new parts from Indy Cylinder Head and going into the 426 Hemi engine I am building.

When I got the Hemi engine in 2005, and uncrated it,it was a holy grail moment, and I was like a proud papa. So I said to my wife, come and check out the new Hemi! She replied, that's just what I need around here ! Another fuc*in engine to trip over! Way to piss in my cornflakes during my moment of glory!

1st off NEVER buy a crate from Indy!!If your doing the crate route,Barton,FHO are a few reputable builders.
Personally,I would hunt for needed parts starting with the block.Depending on your goals would determine a stock block or aftermarket.Plan on spending in the $25k range,if your a good shopper it can be less. There a bunch of good guys out there to deal with! Be carefull buying used parts they can be good,,,,,,they can be BAD!You can PM me for my personal opinion on your build. HEMI-ITIS is a horrible disease,MY condition is fully blown!

I agree, my friends first aluminum Hemi engine from Indy, in his race car, is a coffee table now. He had his second Hemi engine built by a reputable local race engine builder, and it has run strong for many years.

The age old question lol..... $15-20k for crate and the response is if you can't afford it then you can't have it find a junk yard small block...brutal honesty...it sucks most of the time if not every time.

I paid $ 12,600 for my Cummins built 472 Hemi engine in 2005, and as I stated in this thread, I will have 25k in it by the time it is in the car running . I paid 5 grand for the 426 Hemi short block, and thanks to my decision to go with the Edelbrock 705 horsepower top end kit on the 472 Hemi, the new cast iron heads from the 472 Hemi are going on the 426 Hemi short
block. I figured by the time I have the 426 Hemi engine built and running, I will have 15k in that engine. There is no way that I know of to build a second generation Hemi on the cheap!
