Where you live, matters!!!!!

I love this thread because it shows thought and preparedness. What I was a bit concerned about in ghost's amusing and overly descriptive post was that it could also be taken as a time saving road map in the event this information got into the wrong hands.

Gentlemen, please remember this is the internet, permanent (til an electromagnetic pulse takes out the grid anyhow) and readily accessible as a public forum. Be proud of your arsenals and well versed in how to use it all, but be smart too in what the world can learn about you.

Keep the faith and the guns clean brothers! I love and admire you all. :D

I must be very unstable and need lots of care. Its getting bad here, on the news when someone gets in trouble its always picture of the guns, for instance a gentleman was arrested for domestic abuse and the news "head" said "police seized an arsenal today", it was a mossberg shot gun, an older berretta 92, and hunting rifle, looked like a savage with the accu trigger, he had 3 boxes of .243, maybe 3 handfuls of 2 3/4 shells, and a box of cheap 9mm with a couple rounds missing. THATS AN ARSENAL???? I was expecting to see a dozen ar15's, storage tubs of ammo, 10 glock pistols, etc, nope 3 guns, that should be what almost every red blooded american owns at a minimum, lol...

My post was just trying to say we do t need to be weaponized like the military out of our homes. Again - collectors aside - nothing wrong with having defense weapons. I have a sig p226 plenty of ammo. I have a small caliber beretta and several high powered weapons. All have plenty of ammo at hand. I was robbed a couple of years ago. They came while we were sleeping. Left while we were sleeping. I don't know. After that I bought the sig and taught the wife how or use it and it's always handy. Do I need to do more - I don't think so.

I believe in home defense - but I think some people, are out of control with assault rifles and heavy clips etc. Have a few friends along those lines - just don't think it's necessary - God help us if it ever becomes so. I have my weapons too but I'm not armed like swat teams ..... Probably not a popular opinion on this board but it's mine. I'm no liberal pansy but I think I have some common sense. Gun collectors aside - what do the rest of you need all that armor for? They're not coming to bum fu$k, any state. What's it all for?

I have similar thoughts, I am a gun collector, I appreciate this cooper http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=523994575 much more than this noveske http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=524782588 , I have assault weapons in my collection, BUT I am forced to keep them out of state due to our insane laws. I know a lot of guys that keep what ever where ever, but I have too much to lose, so I abide, but it sucks...

BUT, I know plenty of guys armed to the moon, I am talking vests, head gear, etc. And when I say "what is this all for, why have 6 assault rifles and 50K rnds? lol and they all say the same thing "when they come", and I am like "whos coming?", no one cares about you, if they come for you its going to be because you have all this gear, lol...

Heres the truth, if our military comes for us, door to door, am I going to bang it out with them on the lawn with machine guns? I doubt it, I don't care how many guns you have, you are NOT holding off an army, I have a buddy that once said to me "thats why I had 4 sons" (now they are older and all but 1 are on their own), and I said "I couldn't do it, I couldn't watch my sons die fighting", if the army comes to round us all up someday, to put us in camps, or what ever, lol you don't fight them, them are american boys doing their job, I have faith our boys wont be brain washed nazi's rounding us up anyway...

Its so far fetched and I know people say "it could happen", and I say "sure get something for protection, but spend the bulk of your money on a good hideaway where you will be off grid, and sustain for a long time.." Got get a piece of wooded land, go up there on the DL and dig in a bunker, fill it with mre's, water, dig a well with a hand pump, stock pile coal for heat, etc.. There are better plans then spending $20K on guns and $25K on ammo, lol...

What is more likely to happen is the gummint shuts off the freebees, then the zombies from the inner cities get sick of burning their own neighborhoods and move on to the outskirts, then when thats all burnt up they will move further out, so have a plan for something like that, I dont see an issue with it.

On the other hand this is the usa, we are allowed to own guns, so get what you like, as long as you store them safely, I AM A HUGE ADVOCATE IN SAFE KEEPING AND OWNER RESPONSIBLE GUN LAWS, you illegally stored your weapon and it is used in a crime you are just as guilty as the person who used it, pretty simple. Make it a law for people to store their guns in a 2 hour safe, and have that safe fastened to the building structure. I would even go as far as to say they had to have a monitored alarm system. You should see the boys faces at the gun clubs when I say that, lol.. Priceless... BUT if everyone kept their guns safe, there would be no need for any other laws, lol. The only people that could use them with ill intent would be legal owners and since a HUGE percentage of gun crimes are by the latter, it would cut down...

My buddy hates the thought of safe keeping laws, he says "its my stuff I can keep it where I want, because I bust his balls about keeping his hunting rifles under a bed at his hunting cabin, anyone can walk in and take them, there is not even a lock on the door, lol, granted not many people know they are there, and the place is hard to get to , but what if some kids are walking through the woods, find the cabin, go in to snoop around and find them??? nothing good is going to happen after that... He always says "how about finger print sensor on the trigger so only the registered owner can fire it" and I say "yah, it would be a good idea if it could be made reliable" and it drives him crazy...

We have small end tables next to each seat in the living room that have 4" skirts around the bottom of the table top. There's a hand gun in a holster under each one fastened to the underside of the top. There's another on top of the mantle 6 and a half feet off the floor next to the door. Another on top of the big entertainment center wardrobe next to the other door and the Winchester lever action 30/30 next to my bed facing the back door. My wife, ( former police officer) has a Glock 19 on the side of her night table between it and the bed in a holster. We have about 200 rounds for each weapon and yes they are all loaded 24/7/365. We go through every few weeks and unload/clean/let the springs rest. The other night at about 11 PM my wife noticed a red light out front and asked me what it was. I got up and peeked out the front window at a sedan parked in front of the house on our dirt road and running. I stepped out onto the front porch with the Kel Tec PF9 behind my back and there were two guys in it talking **** about "country F**ks". I switched on the porch light and they flipped me the bird and took off spinning up dirt and gravel. I went back in and put away the hand gun and grabbed the Winchester. I went back out into the front yard and watched their tail lights go down the mountain and turn around to come back. I went out and stood next to my split rail fence by the road and held the rifle down over my left arm. As they got close they began to slow down and then the driver shouted," Oh ****! He's got a ******* gun...." and stomped on it. When I went back inside my wife was laughing, she said if I didn't behave myself I was going to get a bad reputation. I said," Good."
-lol
in some places, "We go through every few weeks and unload/clean/let the springs rest." this would be considered foreplay. lol. i just had to.

that is good for you, (not being robbed, but seeing the problem and coming up with a responsible solution), I always say everyone should have a gun if they are allowed to legally own it... My wife can shoot, and she comes to the range all the time with me, she has a sw revolver rim fire 22mag, I am confident if someone comes in the house, she can get to it, and defend herself well. I would not want to catch a double poke from that little pistol, thats how I trained her, stance, aim, center mass 1-2, breath and be alert. Some guys say "empty it into them", lol but what if there is more than one, neutralize the threat, leave the house, and call for help, get safe and hide... Its different for me obviously, I am not leaving my house and hiding, I am not grabbing the 22 mag, its going to be my purpose built 1911 chambered in 40 corbon, at 20 feet the double tap makes one hole, lol...
SO I have no problem with protection, but do it responsibly. Regular Training, safe storage, and responsible home defense plan that all occupants are aware of...

Sigh....after reading the posts in this thread I am reminded of my cousin Bob who was murdered in his own home, at night, asleep. His 6 handguns, shotgun, and hunting rifle securely locked up in his gun safe. They might as well have been never bought. He went to shooting ranges a lot, did 20 years in the Army, was an avid hunter and it amounted to zip. I vowed that it would never happen to me and mine.
I don't worry much about zombies, the govt coming for us or any of that. I live in rural Vermont, our town offices are in a small trailer, we have no post office and have to share with the next town, most are farmers and retired folk. Middle of nowhere. Exactly the sort of place where bad guys like to break in. No police force, state troopers are 30 miles away.
I also know that the internet is permanent and it is a roadmap of sorts. To combat that I intentionally left out an important detail. If your curious what that is, PM me and i'll tell you. CudaChick has a valid point. It was well said. Everyone's situation is different, where u live, how you live, your background and training. All of that goes into what you do and say, what you worry about happening etc. To be morbid for a moment, not everyone has killed another human, hunted them or been hunted by them. All of that goes into it too. Few folks on here have a spouse that used to be a cop i'd wager, and also is a veteran. She too has seen first hand what other humans can and will do. We chose Vermont for a reason to retire. They are good with having, and using guns here. You wont be arrested for defending your life and home here. I agree that the average Joe is more likely to shoot someone they know in the dark at night, than a burglar. Not in my house. More than most, we two have the training and real life experience to do the right thing when it's time. Okay, sorry, i'll get down form the soapbox now.

Leanna you are rapidly becoming a favorite of mine with your logic, whit, and understanding of the nature of things. Thanks so much. You are absolutely correct in what you have said. I don't like personally to advertise what I might and might not have in my possession. As stated the internet is a public domain accessible to any and all. Even prying eyes and those that would seek to do harm. So I tend to keep my self more in a private mode and not be so boisterous in my rhetoric and comments. This topic was originally posted to have a little laughter about the various regions in the US and how the inhabitants are portrayed and to poke a little humor into an already touchy area. It has now been expanded, which in and of itself is a very good thing IMHO. But my intent was at some levity and nothing else. Still I am of the axiom that one must always be "prepared" in every day life even if one has gone to extremes in what they acquire and posses. As with most of my fellow Veterans here on FBBO, we have been trained, trained, and then trained some more. It even includes those that are or were members of our Police forces. It is the ones that garner that "Cowboy Hero Attitude" that are the ones that make the big mistake and wrong choices which inevitably result in the worse possible outcome. For me I prefer to walk softly and have that big stick at my disposal when the need arises...cr8crshr/Tuck

Thank you darlin. I was raised to be honest, forthright, not to quit or give up, and to be the first to admit when I was wrong or screwed up. I got my *** beat for lying so I learned early on not to.

Unlike most of the responders here, I was taught how to shoot at a young age but sadly not much else beyond that. I was probably one of few former NRA and Second Amendment supporters who had never owned a weapon LOL but that's all changed now. Better late than never, my dad would say.

I look at the current situation with an open mind and am preparing for the worst while remaining hopeful for the best.

... As with most of my fellow Veterans here on FBBO . ..cr8crshr/Tuck

Just an incidental reminder here since so many of you ARE beloved Veterans, I offer a 5% labor discount to all registered FBBO members and 10% to Gold members, but my best reduction is -- and always has been -- for you.

All active or retired/discharged military members enjoy 15% off.

The way I see it, we might be typing in German, Japanese (or Arabic <gasp>) if it wasn't for each of you and your comrades. It's just my very small part in saying Thank You for protecting me and helping to secure my freedoms.

If I don't ask YOU when you call or write for a quote, be sure to tell me! It's my favorite discount to offer that goes well beyond generic Customer Service. I value and appreciate your service and sacrifices more than my mere words could ever convey.

< curtsey >

Now back to our regularly scheduled thread.

cr8crshr.....I appreciate your insights and your forthright response. I'm not sure who your referring to as having a "Cowboy Hero Attitude" and I agree that I don't care for that sort of crap either. As for my posts..perhaps I share too much, I don't know. I spent so many months learning to share everything after the sandbox that it has become an automatic response almost. When we returned there were a few guys that were in supply and also file clerk types that went wacko wearing all sorts of black outfits with veteran/warrior crap all over them and bragging to anyone who would listen about how badass they are. That sort of stuff sucks. For myself, if I said it, it's true. It is what it is. Not a hero, never been a cowboy, but I do have attitude.

Sorry to hear about your cousin, Not exactly what I was talking about when I mentioned "safe keeping", I use safes and plenty of them, guns need to be locked up when they are not in your control. Its easy for someone who has a ccw to keep their home defense weapon at the ready, years ago before I started keeping a designated firearm for home defense, I used to come home, take my pistol off and put it in the bread box in the kitchen, which was higher than the kids could reach.
Now that I have a the designated gun and I have learned a few things I use a quick safe, I put my ccw in arms reach, so really 2 guns at the ready and my wife HD gun is in a print quick safe also...

We were always what I would call semi prepared, and then not far from here in my wifes family home town and a place we frequent regularly, the pettit family was killed in their own home. Beautiful family, just a sad and sick story, so after that, we paid much better attention, motion detectors that interrupt the tv pip and show live cam feeds 360 degrees around the property where the motion was, cams at all the doors, revamped a bit of the alarm system, and started a real plan for the family that we practice...

Hopefully it is all for nothing, but just in case...

Sorry to hear about all of that Seventy, it is an all too common story though. We have always relied on our dogs as well. Our collie goes nuts even when some neighbor is walking by on the dirt road. She hears everything. We had a friend stop by on a dark raining , no moon night at 2am and just jiggle the front door handle a little. From the complete other side of the house she sprang up from a sound sleep and tore off through the house barking a deep, deep bark that is usually reserved for important stuff. She tried to go through that door. I have no doubt she would hear anything long before we will. BTW, I rigged up a trick in my previous homes in different countries that will work every time. I always rig up a toggle switch on the back edge of the headboard that when flipped fires a camera strobe in the hallway and at each outside door. It's like 100,000 candle power or something, blinding. It does two things, first it renders anyone else blind, and it surprises them so they say something that lets me know where they are in the house. And possibly if there is more than one. Since I've covered my eyes i'm the only one seeing in the dark. I never switch on lights as I go through the house looking for what made the noise. Only used it once so far, in West Germany, whoever it was made tracks while knocking over just about everything on the way out. Cursing in German all the way.

Ghostrider my Friend I wasn't referring to anyone in particular but in the general broad sense of things. There are so many posers out there that it becomes rather foolish to put any credence in what they say they have and are capable of doing. I am well aware of our shared experiences in our Military service. And as you stated there were some "wanna be's" that took it to extremes. Remember the old adage and saying that one cannot BS a BS'er. Yet all too many will inflate things just to make themselves feel as though they were something and still are. Kind of the "Stolen Valor" thing. We all know who the real bad asses are and they are really some of the finest...Just My 2 cents...cr8crshr/Tuck

I keep my guns in a safe but I just picked up my early warning. View attachment 293721

My grand father used to say "I stopped believing in tough guys back when I stopped believing in sanata claus, theres just no suck thing" ... I am by no means a bad ***, lol.
When I was a bit younger and playing "joe boxer" as a way of getting exercise (everyone over here boxes, its like karate classes on the west coast) I thought nothing of "over defending" myself BUT, I don't want anyone to ever sue me again, I got in a bit of a scuffle a lil while ago, over non sense, I will share the story---

We are at an engagement party, my wife out of no where comes up to me and grabs my arm says "lets go", so i am like "WHATS WRONG", then an old friend of ours is like "IM WHATS WRONG, YOUR WIFE DOESNT KNOW WHEN TO MIND HER OWN BUSINESS" BLAH BLAH BLAH, my wifes cousin married this guy and divorced him 2 years before this, turns out my wife said to her cousin "its about time" back then after the divorce (not nice, but women say stuff like that, she was trying to make her cousin feel better), well she told him and that rubbed him wrong and now he had a couple drinks and got the courage to tell her it bothered him, in all the wrong ways..

So I say "relax, lets all get along, its a party", he walks over like hes going to shake my hand and punches me in the face!!!! Nice right?, so what ever happens next, I was sober, so do the math, lol.. fast forward past the violence, cops come, ambulance comes and I dont get arrested, no charges, its over right? NOPE, I get arrested a week later, call a lawyer, the da's office wants nothing to do with it, so it is dismissed, not disposed, actually thrown out.. So its all over right? NOPE, civil suit, my lawyer says "this may not end well, these are tough cases"... Sure as sh!t $38K and $10K in lawyers, just because I had it... I admit its all my fault, I had 3 simple assaults on my record at the time (NOW I had them expunged, never seen the need before) and my lawyer said we need to counter sue, and do this and that, and its going to be an extra $5K, and I was like, "no way", well with no counter suit and because I wasn't proactive about everything, I looked guilty, had witnesses saying he was the aggressor, but he had lost wages, medical bills, photos of him looking all hurt and innocent.. SUCKED, not just the money, just knowing he got it, he was actually suing me for $500K, lol... so under $40K aint' too bad, and his medical bills were right around $30K so the lawyer go the rest, although I was told he never paid the hospital bills, who cares...

BUT, that is my story why its NOT worth being a "BAD ***" or "TOUGH GUY", not only did I get punched in the face, spill my sangria (I KNOW, it was either that or canned beer), rip my shirt, scuff my shoes, and break a pair of glasses that were on my head, BUT I lost almost $50K, and at least 6 days wasted, and countless hours of talking about it with everyone... SO now, I just stay quiet, you wanna punch me in the face go ahead, but be warned, when the doctor says I have 30 days to live, you are going to have 29....
