At 104,000 Ft Yeagar could not get the nose "Pitched down" because:
At 108,000 ft the air was thinner than the current 104,000 ft and at 104,000 ft there was still enough "grip" of resistance to prevent him from pitching the nose over with the 104NF's little thrusters....(nose was at a 50 degree limit)
Earlier flight that morning he flew it to 108,000 ft, with success...
But not on this second try....

The rest is history, as they say.
