A favorite of WWI aircraft, development of the rotary engine didn't last much longer after the end of the war. Compact, reliable and with a good power to weight ratio, they reached a power ceiling and were overtaken by more conventional designs.
Colorizing those old photos certainly brings new life to them.

all these young men...probably anywhere from 17 to early 30s...and not a damn cell phone in sight. Must have been great back then.
