Germany's Dornier Do-X flying past New York in 1931.

As a luxurious travel vessel, the 61 ton flying boat offered three decks, a sumptuous dining room with its own kitchen, a wet bar in the smoking lounge, and sleeping berths for the 66 passengers on long flights.

The chief navigator at his station:

The radio operator looked like he was sitting in an opera house.

One of the shorter flights managed to fit 169 passengers, quite a feat for a 1920s design.

The dining salon could have been in a luxury liner at sea...

Just like a large ship, when engine adjustments were needed, the captain used an intercom to relay his requirements to the engineer who maintained control of all twelve engines.

Back when flying was a special thing...

The English Electric Canberra was such a good bomber design that Martin built their own version under license in the U.S.A. as the Martin B-57 Canberra, producing over 400 of them starting in 1953. NASA still uses three of them for high altitude research.
