Actual RC scale model airplane NASA used to prove a full size 747 could piggyback the space shuttle across the country from Edwards AFB California or White Sands New Mexico back to Kennedy Space Center Florida.

I read many years ago that without the flight computers piloting the shuttle was like trying to fly a brick.
Perhaps it was for lift?

High angle of attack increases lift...to a point. It also increases drag but they weren't in a hurry.
