The Texas, a ship worthy of its name! While all other ships said our troops are too far, we can’t offer fire support on d day. The captain of the Texan did the most Texan thing he could. Flood compartments, we need more elevation!

cheapsunglasses,
Correct me if I am wrong but didn't the funding for major repair on the Texas finally get through?

Edit

Well done

Back in 2005, a friend who was a captain on a freighter invited a few of us to tour his ship while in drydock in Boston for repairs and a new paint job. The propellers were refurbished down the street from where I now live. Me with the kids ....

USS Phelps DD360, 12 battle stars, decommissioned in 1947 and sold for scrap.
My Dad served on her from January 1942 to late 1944

Bow shot and the 16/50s
I have to apologize for the quality of these shot I am posting. There are old 35mm pictures and I take a picture of them. I have plenty just need to find them all

View attachment 1417353The rifles fired at different intervals because the blast overpressure would knock them off course
While it seems logical to stagger the firing interval, those 16" shells had a velocity of 2500 feet per second so for that tight grouping they'd have to be fired in the same fraction of a second.

I was talking with one of the docents on the New Jersey or North Carolina I can't remember which about the firing computers for the big guns. I asked why they never removed them and replaced them with modern technology. He told me when they brought them back in the 80s they ran tests and found the existing ones on board worked as well or outperformed the technology. Those things are huge too
I though that quite interesting
