The other day I noticed a vibration when the car is in park, at first I thought it was the exhaust because its welded to the frame in the back and when you open the trunk you can really hear it good. Then I was experimenting and thought I would check to see if it made the noise in neutral and it didnt!

So what does that mean? Is my pump going out? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Rich

My money would be the vibration is coming from a failing fan clutch.

Thanks Bruz, I dont have a fan clutch tho. I took it to oreilly's and one of the guys said it sounded like the planetary gears in the trans. So I bought some Lucas to put in there but it didnt do anything. Its looking like im going to have to park it and start saving money. Ill see if you can hear it in a vid and post it later today.

Ah, so you have sound effects too? There's one other thing I would check and that's the cover that goes on the lower-front part of the bell housing. If there's a noise with the vibration, that could be it. The tranny on one of my 73 road runners was making an odd, intermittent, noise and vibration and I thought it was going bad until a guy at a Mopars show told me to check the bolts on the cover. I got under my car and sure enough those bolts were loose and what I was hearing and feeling was the cover plate rattling under various conditions.

I tightened the bolts and no more noise or vibration.

sounded like the planetary gears in the trans
That is the most interesting parking lot diagnosis I've ever heard before.

Bruzilla is right ... climb underneath with some wrenches and start tightening everything in site. Hopefully it is something really simple ... and way cheaper that spending money to get your trans redone.

Is your transmission acting funny other than the noise you are hearing?

Let's see...makes noise in park and it's the planetary gears?? How do gears make noise when they are not turning? Do you have a good transmission shop near by? One that's honest? I'd go there before I'd take it to some auto parts store....especially when it's a chain store.

I will crawl under there when I get off work and start checking bolts, There is no trans shop nearby. Closest one is is around 20 miles away. Its a reverse manual and shifts fine. I thought that was wierd that he said planetary gears as well. It should also make noise in neutral as well I think. The weird thing about it is, You can really hear it good when you open the trunk.

Good news guys! Took off the dust cover and had my daughter bump the engine while I checked the converter bolts and low and behold 2 of them were loose. I torked them down and I'm good to go.

Absolutely! Or I could cut him a good deal on some Bumperettes!

Actually the thanks go to the unknown Mopar guy at Mid Atlantic Mopars. :) I was just days away from paying $$$ to get my trans rebuilt when he told me about checking all the bolts. :)

The guys I really for sorry for are the ones with modern cars who pay to have their trans rebuilt because of "shift problems" when 90% of the time what they are really feeling is an ignition problem, usually a bad plug, wire, or coil, and the tranny is just fine.

I cant wait to go to oreilly's and let the guy know what it actually was. He totally scared the **** out of me. lol

Did you Loc-tite the bolts? They should be. Use the red....

No, I didnt. Im fresh out of loctite. But if it happens again I will do so.
