Hey everyone, my father and i have a 65 belvedere II with a 440 hooked up to a 727. After we went to the track a few weeks ago, now the car is "jumping" into gear when the it hits 3000 rpm. It feels like the converter all of a sudden grabs and the car lunges forward. The car never did this before and also never had any transmission problems either. It has a 3000 stall 10 inch turbo action pro series converter, reverse manual valve body and the turbo action cheetah shifter. Anyone have any idea why the car would begin to do this? We checked the fluid level and it is at the proper level. Thanks Mike

what do you mean "jumping"? You have a MVB so it cannot put itself into gear w/o you doing it. Just curious if you could use a different term to describe the issue.

Thanks for the reply, what i mean by the jumping is that to get it going you need to really whack the throttle, once it hits the 3000 rpm it begins to move. I know its a 3000 stall but shouldnt it at least move in first gear a bit without revving up to 3000 or even without any throttle? The car is stuck until it hits 3000 rpm then chirps the tires and starts to roll. It doesnt seem like too much of a problem but it started to do this after a six pass day at the track, and it never did that before that day. Thanks Mike

yes, it doesnt need as much throttle to get it going in reverse though. When i took the car out from my garage yesterday, with my driveway having a slight pitch i noticed it would roll backwards in gear. I had to hold the brake and hit the throttle a couple times until it started to move. That to me says that its not being held up by the brakes, so my guess is the converter is maybe having problems. Thanks Mike

reverse runs under a higher pressure than the forward gears... this "could" be caused by converter failure not allowing appropriate fluid flow through itself. have you inspected the converter yet? I would check each of your pressures at the test ports. Jack up the end of your car and hook up a pressure tester at each port to test each gear's pressure. I think somewhere, there is just not enough pressure being built up do either to a component failure or blowby in seals.

stupid question, but is it only doing this on first start up ? ... maybe torque converter drainback ? .. if you start it up and let it idle in neutral for a minute or two, does it go right into gear ??
