How much to pay for RR

Found a RR on craigslist. Claimed to be a 71 RR. I got the VIN which is RP23G2R which is telling me 1972 Plymouth Satellite Sebring (plus?) 318 made in Windsor Ontario. I have the pics from the add. Looks to be clean. Has a 440/727 from a 75 motorhome (supposedly 71K miles on the combo). If you look hard at the pics you can make out the roof strobe and rear wing. Looks like there are HID headlights too. The motor and engine bay look rattle-canned. Its got the passenger side mirror already (good) and it also is supposed to have a 340 hood. Not sure what that looks like for 72. The freakishly clean interior is hooking me. My daughter loves it. Thought about getting it for her to match my RP23G 71. A buddy and me are hoping to go check it out today. Opinions? What should I offer? I have an idea. He's had a couple of "sight unseen" offers too.

I'm sure he did have a couple of "Sight unseen" offers while claiming it to be a real '71 Roadrunner... That part alone makes me kind of nervous to be honest. Either he lied to sell it, or he genuinely doesn't know and to me that's just as scary...

That aside, like you said, it's hooking you. Value in your eyes and mine are probably two different things. I will tell you this though, I just bought a real 72 road runner for a smidge over $9K.... Depends on over all value, and a lot of different factors that would affect over all cost to bring it to it's realistic current market value at it's best. How does it stack up to it's CLONE competition nationwide? You can use that to your benefit as well. Nothing wrong with a clone, I almost bought one myself and think I would have been just as happy, but they do have an entirely seperate price bracket. But, the most important cost factor tends to be, how happy will it make you?

Like FridayGt said, It makes me nervous if he's claiming it's a real Runner but provides a Satellite vin. If it's a clone he should say that, and who know what else he's trying to pull over on you. I'd let him know what you found.

Going stricly from the pics I was thinking $2K-$2.5K. Too high? Offensive Low Ball? I'm going to give him the benefit-of-doubt and assume he does not know its a 72 Sebring. I had my current 71 for about a year before I learned to read VIN's and found out I had a 71 Sebring instead of a RR. That was 26 years ago. The interior looks way better than mine. Someone went to the trouble and put the strobe stripe and go-wing on it. I'm guessing 2.76 8 1/4 open diff too just based on my experience with mine. If get to look at it today its getting a thorough inspection: frame rails, floor pan (gotta love hardtop weather-stripping), trans-mount and crossmemeber, k-frame (I put a 69 R/T K on mine, then found out all I had to do was change the lower control arms to get the sway bar setup I was after), trunk, etc. I'm tempted the pull the rear seat and get the build sheet (at least thats where mine was, and is now lost). Hopefully it still has a fender tag (mine never did). My daughter loves it. She's willing to let me have the loaded 01 Intrepid ES back for this car. I reminded her it does not have A/C (hopefully it is at least setup for it being a Sebring Plus). She said she would make it "cool". Love teenagers...

$2K-$2.5K does seem kind of low to me, but heck, it depends. And in this market if you have the cash that he needs, you never know. How is it on rust? How does it run? Electrical stuff like high's, low's, running lights, break and reverse lights and so on. Is it driven? Don't forget to drive it through a puddle to check the frame if you can't measure it.

Judging by the pics I'm guessing it does not run or is using a magic distributor and radiator.:grin: I will see if he has a battery laying around to verify the electrical: lights, dash, etc. He's been offered about half his asking price, sight unseen and he didnt blow the offer off. Those that made the offer most likely didnt get the VIN #. So my position is a non-running, take-my-word-the-engine-is-good, everything works, its all there you just have to assemble it car. Like I mentioned in the first post, he states the engine is a 75 RV 440/727 with 71K miles that he has not tried out yet. Just pulled the valve covers and oil pan and did a visual. Hence the slightly low ball offer.

Yeah, with that large list of assumptions that price seems less and less low. Put cash on his hood, see what he says!

There's a running driving 72 SSP with a 440 and working a/c near me for 8K obo, and a true 71 RR "Arizona" body 383 low option car, with new blk/orange int advertized for 10K "must sell". Both have been advertized for a few months.

Its a nice looking car but if that is the VIN it isint a RR, Road Runners from 68 to 74 started with RM. If you knew this, ok, i thought i would mention it. He shouldn't be advertising as a RR.

The latest price guide that was posted is fairly consistant with what used to be published in old cars price guide.
They show RRs (RM VIN) as generally being worth at least 33% more than premium or high Sats (RP or RH VIN).
Of course it also doesn't run.....

Black engine bay has "CHEBY" written all over it. If it's a GM guy, might not know it's a real RR or not, might have to mention that fact to him/her when looking it over.

RP= premium price- Satellite in 66-67, Sport sat in 68-70, Sebring Plus in 71-72.
RH= high- Bel II in 66-67, Sat in 68-70, Sebring in 71-72 IIRC.

I've seen about a dozen cars listed as "Satellite/Roadrunner" in the past couple of years.

Thought more about my last statement, and (IIRC) the price gap used to be about 50%, but now the "regular" Satellites and Coronets are more collectable and more valuabe in relation to the "true" muscle cars.

offer what your gut tells you. you are the only one that knows where your comfort zone is. sometimes you Win and sometimes you Lose. its a learning curve. most people are afraid to low ball because they don't want to offend. ask him his bottom nut price, go from there. rick

Assume the engine needs work. The Charger I just bought that "ran when parked" needs freeze plugs. That's quite a bit of labor.

and it was offered sight unseen. now your standing there cash in hand. makes a big difference, especially after you have gone over it.

Well we didnt get to go checkout the car yesterday. The guy never returned our calls. I may have another short day today and will try again this afternoon. If not, no biggie. I wasnt really looking to begin with. Just thought it might be a fun project for me and my daughter.
