i just started trying to get transmission in my 440 i got two bolts in but now torque converter will not spin freely im using a aftermarket flex pate could that be the issue? its one of those gold round with a half moon cut in it i thought id use it being it was on engine when i got it i was wondering if i could of put it in backwards? never used a flex plate like this before. if somthing im not seeing and help to the cause would be great b4 i ruin somthing plz help looks like converter is in the pilot ok or could the angle be causing it? thank again if somone has any ideas would be great

Did you install the tq converter into the trans first, turning it until it engaged into the front pump?

When the torque converter is fully seated into the transmission, it should be about 1" past the mating surface of the trans housing. You can measure this by laying a straight edge across the mounting surface of the trans, and measure to the torque converter lug. Should be about 1 ".

it is in the pump i felf the resistane in the pump turning i ws about a 1" but ill double chack again in the am

A stock flex plate is offset toward the engine slightly. When I put my 451 in, the T/C did not spin freely after I bolted the trans to the engine. Had me a little worried, too. Seems like I had to put a crescent wrench or pry with a screw driver to turn the T/C around enough to the correct position to align the flex plate bolts. But it all has been working fine for the past few months. Must be a tight fit in the crankshaft pilot hole is my guess.

im a little woried cuz i dont want to ruin my tc or my trany i spent alot of mont to make a race trany and the instructions on my tc says it should spin freely i know it was a pain to get tc in to pump all the way if u can call me if ur still up wpould be greatly appreciated

there is no play ay torque converter feels like in the pump but am going to lower trany and measure from bell housing when i took it down engine drobed back n tilted back like it was u think it could be just binding until i get crossmember in? what u mean by freeplay?

if the bell housing is bolted flush to the motor it is self aligning so no binding really possible from that.is you flex plate flat or offset at crank?if your offset is toward the trans that may be your problem.most flex plates cant be installed backwards but you never know.

Just put my converter and tranny in last weekend. Aftermarket flex-plate. Flex plate holes will only line up one way because of bolt pattern. My tranny has two dowel pins that line the engine to tranny. My guess is your tranny is cocked a little side to side or up and down ( dont draw it in with the bolts ( i used kant-twist clamps till flush then started bolts). Until it is drawn up flush it may bind. I had a small clamp on the bottom housing so the converter would not slide forward ( I had to put tailshaft up and over h-pipe then up. There should be a stamp on the flex plate saying toward engine.

When installing the converter in the trans,it usaually need to be rotated several times while pushing the vert towards the trans. You will feel it click and fall into place, sometimes take a while and can "click" 3 times before being completely engaged in the front pump.I just remover my converter last week to get it adjusted with a tighter stahl.

Just talked to 74 RR 440, and he pulled the tranny back out. Problem was the crank had a pilot bushing in it for a 4 speed. And it wasn't in all the way! He was originally goig to use a 4 speed, then switched to auto.

That would do it! Glad he found it...

Look at the pump lugs in the pump be sure it didnt break off, cause when u pull the trans up to the motor and the converter hub doesnt seat in the crank, its easy to break the pump lugs off, i had a friend who did this twice!! had to remove the pump and replace it

That style flex plate is for use with an externally balanced engine and a netrual balance torque converter. There are a couple of different types for different applications. Just make sure you double check everything or you could have a balance problem. ...unless you are sure the previous owner knew what they were doing.
