Why would someone do this? Ive got it all chipped out now, just doesnt make any sense to me. IMAG0098.jpg

that should be a caulking like a seam sealer from the factory:thinker:

ya,just started peeling that junk out on my 67.i think it started to crack while the car sat in the dealer lot, back in 1967!

All dependent on weather and how much exposure it saw. Mine was in such good shape that it is still in place. Body guy was suprised it was original stuff!

I would chip it out and go with something like a silicone based paintable caulk. That stuff lasts forever.

Yup. Factory seam sealer. It never lasted worth a snot.

I must have had bad luck because of the three cars I have removed it from, all had this stuff stuck like cement to the rails. It took a couple of evenings and very sore arms to get it all removed.

It was so bad it didnt have any problems cleaning it out. I just have to go over it with a wire brush and get that rust out and Ill be good to go. 30 bucks for that seamsealer is pretty high for a poor boy!!!

I hear ya.....One golden rule with auto body supplies...you get what you pay for. 3M is premium grade.

SEM makes good stuff..Use all sorts of their products. They have a heavy bodied for $10 bucks cheaper.

Good luck what ever route you go. IMO I wouldn't use a cheap regular seam sealer out of a tube for something like that.

I'll probably go with some good stuff, I don't want to replace it after a few years. Even though 3m will be laughing all the way to the bank.
