440 Cast Crank 6 Speed

your thoughts on my set up !

i have 540 HP/588 FT TQ 440 with a " Cast " crank and thinking of running a 6 sped trans behind it, the car is a street car with street tires and will Not see the track, will the crank be okay with a manual trans or should i go for a automatic??

I would go with a 6 speed. What rear gears are you running?
Could be an issue because if your RPM on a carb engine going down the Highway might not high enough to keep from lugging it down, and making that 6th gear really useless your wanting to run top speed on the Salt flats. I was told that by one of the transmission vendors here.

An example is my SRT 10 is a 6 speed with 4.10 gears and it tachs 1600 RPM at 75 MPH, but it is a fuel injected V10 viper engine. It really help out on the MPG, which can be as high as 18-19 on a flat highway.

If your going to run an automatic, I would go with an overdrive unit that will handle that much HP. since you are just doing street driving it would only make sense for better gas mileage and less wear and tear on the engine.

iam not 100% on what gears i will be running but thought of 3.55, i do realise 6th gear will be used only for long distance driving, but i'm mostly concerned about running the Cast crankshaft,
 
Mom's cast cranks are pretty. I wouldn't worry about even with the amount of HP and TQ you have. Doesn't sound like you're going to be beating on it like you would at the track. I say go for it.....but....how much would it cost you to find a good forged unit?
 
Check to see if the crank was drilled for an input shaft, pilot bearing.... I wouldn't hesitate, if it has the hole already, if not you need to have it drilled, otherwise... Good luck & have fun rowing thru them 6 gears....

If you are running the externally balanced balancer and flywheel, I don't want to be anywhere near your car when you approach 7500 RPM. In technical terms you don't want to find out the hard way at what RPM the first critical is on your rotating assembly. Maybe it's OK but you better look into it. So with that kind of power and RPM I'd want a little more margin. I mean....Are you really going to drive it like an old lady?? Most performance builds from back when typically used the OEM steel crank even for track use. At minimum I'd get an inspected; detected OEM forged crank.

cranky i was told $1200.00 for steel crank installed, new damper, bearings, balancing rotting assembly, seals, used steel crank.

Meep-Meep your right i wont be driving it like a old-lady, but it will never see 7500 rpm, on the dyno it made 540 HP @ 5500 & 588 TRQ @ 3900 rpm it's a low compression motor, 9.5.1, fresh off the dyno,
