My 65 Satellite has original rustproofing. What's the best way to soften to remove it? Not thrilled with the torch method. I've heard diesel fuel would work. Any suggestions you have would be great.

I've never tried this job. Don't think I would use an open flame either.
And diesel sounds messy.
What about a heat gun?

Put 'remove undercoating' in the advanced search at top right corner of the page. There are several posts on this. Good luck.

if you are talking original under coating then eric is correct.did that a while back on my 67 coronet.needler method worked great.remember that stuff has asbestose in it,so be carefull about dust control and a mask!

I bought a heat gun today. Gonna give that a try. Couldn't find a needle gun.

I used a heat gun on my car but have done several others using many methods. Diesel stinks imo. Oil soaked undercoating comes off easier but that's pretty messy too.

...wait until its COLD the colder the better. The Undercoat Stuff will "break" .. and you can peel off the stuff with a sharp edged tool

A chipping hammer works on the larger chucks. You can get a cheap needle scaler from Harbor Freight: http://www.harborfreight.com/compact-air-needle-scaler-96997.html
Use a good mask! Bad dust in there! I strip all I can with a scraper or scaler then use odorless mineral sprits and atf 50/50 mix in a garden sprayer. Soak it over night then start scraping it off. Messy but it works.
