Comments about purists and haters is getting really old

I think what Tallhair is saying is that when someone refers to what a purist might like or dislike is actually refering to the stereotype of the purist and not an actual person/purist.

Pretty sure your talking about my post awhile back, sorry i wont use the word purists again

The hating type comments against the alleged purists who as a rule don't piss on anyone's ride on this forum are really getting old. To me it's reverse discrimination and a put down when the "purists" are not doing any bitching about anyone's choices, rides or what someone decides to do to with their own car.

The closest I recall seeing any comments on personal preference is regarding wheel selection and that's only when opinions are solicited. I also I recall one go-wing post where comments were solicited. Other than that people do what they want and that's OK with everyone here, unless someone asks questions about originality or option codes and then all the "drive it like you stole it" and "it's your car do what YOU want" comments flow like water off a ducks back. And that is usually in threads where people are seeking advice on what is correct and that IS what THEY want in those cases.

I only used the term "hating" because its almost always in the same sentence as "purists".

Off my soap box. Carry on

This is a great forum full of great people who support and help one another. I think everyone here does anything they can to help another member out and we all bring different skills and experience and each of us does what we can. I wonder if maybe some folks have been criticized by some haters in other threads or in everyday life and carry that resentment with them. But as many of you have said and all of us know this is a great forum and that crap doesn't go on here or I would be one of the first to rile against it along with all of you so hopefully the hater comments can calm down.

Thanks everyone

I think pissing matches are part of the game though. Everyone has their idea of what works and what doesn't. Look at engine threads, there are 40 replies and somehow you end up with 50 opinions and a huge battle over some issue the OP never even asked.

But that's what we have women for. They drive us nuts but somehow keep un knuckleheads under control.

Can't live with them, can't live without them,,,,,,,,,,,,,or my MOPAR.

I went through a half dozen OEM,s and day 2 cars till I found the right one to do what I always wanted.
Now it's morphed in to what is ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,whatever that might be:angel3:

I apologize to you FROSTBITE I really feel bad about that. I tired to change it so if someone tried to search that comment that it wouldn't be identifiable but in reality the comments are typically "the purists are going to hate this but I don't care" or something to that effect. There are many posts like that and this is not about you at all. Again I apologize for that.

The thing I think most but maybe not everyone will get from this thread is why single out any group and call them haters. I never see any comments like the racers, wing car crowd, A12 guys, resto mods, pro touring guys, etc are going to hate on this.

I get where you're coming from Tallhair, and I think most sensible folk here do as well.

I am in the "Appreciation of everyone's ability to be unique" brigade....if that makes sense. I like most of what I see here and if there is a car that I don't particularly enjoy...I move on without passing judgement. My cars have never being 100 point cars, but I like to try and reproduce that factory look. At times it is difficult to get original parts and therefore, a substitute part is found or made. Sometimes a more practical solutions comes along, or a bit of extra performance is called for. I have headers and an aluminium intake plus a Rev-n-nator for reliability and performance....apart from that the factory look is close.

Reading about experiences and performance upgrades as well as restoration tips is what most people come here for. And probably the biggest draw card is the fact that most here are friendly and are will to offer genuine advice or heap praise upon other member's efforts. At least that's why I come here, and after a while you build up a good solid bunch of innerweb friends who sometimes go that extra mile to help other people out.

The only group I don't really enjoy hearing from are the haters....so I guess you could say I hate the haters :)

I am of the mind set that if you want a numbers matching piece of history, great for you. I won't call you a purist. If I had a car that was unique I may do the same. But in the same context, if you want a modernized version of what was designed long ago, good for you too. I may comment if you cut up and change a very unique / limited edition of a model though, but as for the actual modification, whatever.
Maybe I'm missing all the derogatory comments being referred to, but I have sure seen a lot more on other forums. I kinda think this is one of the most open minded forums I frequent. Most members here seem to me to be quite tolerant and supportive.
Having said all this, I did use the "purist" term in my own build thread once, saying I was not one, when it came to my slant six car. Oops....I guess it really wasn't necessary to use the term there either as I may have offended the poster that I replied to.

X2. You put into words exactly what I was thinking. Kinda scary.

I think it is all silly. I mean really? What else should we call purists, or should we call them the numbers matching crowd? It is just a word which describes a group of people and it does so in a manner that accurately reflects the meaning and the group. Just like resto modders prefer a modded resto, purists want all original or virgin or pure factory cars. If we have come to the point that accurate words are hurtful, then shoot me now. Lol.
With that said however, I have seen both sides make a side handed swipe here and there, but come on. We can not stop slight handed swipes by changing a word. Especially a word that is so reflective of the true nature of its intent. I have been a mopar purist for years. Up until my current build that is. I am sure I will piss of some the the purists here for cutting up a numbers matching RR with some pretty rare options like white interior, a/c, power windows. It is also a VERY solid car and considering I am doing some major custom body mods(like hand fabricating completely unique quarters etc) it would have been much wiser to buy a junked up cheapo satellite to start with. But, this is the car I have and this is he car I fell in love with, so this is the car I am putting so much effort into. I know it is not financially smart and even some pretty mild purists would look at me cross eyed to know what I've done to a numbers car, but hey, to each his own. Despite my own Purist roots, this build is more of a "what if" build. I'm using design elements of several different Plymouths to make one unique car or as some will call it, one bastardized pile of mopar parts. I'm fine with that. I'm fine with who I am and please everyone feel free to call me a Purist or a Modder either one. I have been called both and I am fine with that. It's just like Chip Foose. Some love him and some hate him. My car will be even more to that extreme, cause this build goes past anything I've seen Foose do. Not that I am comparing myself to Foose btw, just that my mods on this build are more extensive than most of his builds. I look forward to seeing the reaction no matter how it comes out, because I am happy with myself and who I am. Just my two cents.

After all is said and done we all love number matching original cars. For some its the final product and for others it's the foundation. I love starting with original Cars. It means less surprises as I day 2 it! Lets face it as long as there has been people there has been labeling good and bad. We are human and we are good at grouping things similar into a category and giving it a name. People program computers to do this very same thing so we can understand what the computer program understands. I do not believe any harm is meant by the word. It's just the way we recognize A group who share this hobby. Either way they are still just old cars and we love em. My family calls me the car nerd and thinks this forum is full of car nerds. I just laugh with them cause in a way its true or i make fun of them for the things they like and they laugh with me. Why don't we put some tools in our purse and go work on our cars and be men with thicker skin.

Haters cover a large type of people. Haters are normally miserable and spew their hate no matter what. They end up banned at most sites until they learn how to control their MOUTH!! I have one that follows me around, don't you???:tongue3:

all the above looks good on paper gentlemen but you all know that is not how it works...else this topic would not have come up for discussion..you will see this on all forums that are dedicated to specific makes..and the older the car on the average..the deeper the resentment between the original, personalized and the customs...different mindsets..different builds...and I only say one thing to the "purists" if not for the folks going custom/modified..where do you think all your parts are coming from to stay or take that build back to stock...you reaping more benefits that you care to stop and think about..parts, original value higher as fewer originals are on the road...everyone gets what they want out of this hobby...personal satisfaction..I have originals, modified and customs..each car's own merit based on the condition you found it in usually dictates the direction of the build. I get a lot of flak from the 40's gang on my builds but I want to be able to do a bit more than 15 below speed limit, I want not to shift gears on the column, (how uncivilized is that) I also want to be able to stop and stop short if needed...I want to accelerate on to the interstate and cruise with the big dogs..sometimes I like being a shiftless bastard (automatic tranny) but then there are some that just scream 4/5 speed and floor shifter..again...each car is a different build..

I started out as a racer back in 74 then went on to be a purist for quite along time, then after the stable was too full, I went back to a being a racer. I really stopped looking at all the matching #'s cars but did notice when I would go to Carlisle or to a car show, 1st thing I would do is look at the fender tag or dash vin to see if it was a true #'s car or not.
So its still in my blood/ Never a hater of purists at all since for a long time I was one of those guys.

Everyone should keep their cars stock.

This is an example of what i'm talking about. BTW no purists were sighted in this thread doing any hating whatsoever

I'm sure I've been guilty of that at some point in time but what you need to understand is that it gets old posting your progress and having someone tell you "not my style", "leave it alone", "15"s for me" or whatever. I read allot of builds on here and if I'm reading someone else's thread that is doing something other than what I'd do "I don't insert my own preferences PERIOD" it's they're build and I just look at it threw they're eyes and comment on the great work they are doing. If it isn't your style or what you would do "shut up" that's just how I feel about it, I don't make comments against anyone else's choices unless supportive and expect the same in return. I have nothing against the so called purist only when they push they're preferences on others or make those remarks. In fact I have a deep respect for the insane things these guys will go threw to make a car correct, paint marks, all OEM parts, correct coatings, documents, etc. I'm just a build it YOUR WAY, DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT kinda guy, I bought mine to have fun with and that's what I'm going to do. This is why my build thread is titled Restomod Charger "you know what your going to see before you even open it". I use the term purist and mean it just as it is "purist" no insult of any kind.

My comments have nothing to do with the term purist being used to identify a segment of our forum.

My comments have nothing to do with how anyone builds a car or what choices they make.

My comments are about repeated characterization of a group of our forum generally referred to as purists and these purists being labeled and all bundled together as "haters"

I concur with 747mopar. No one should be disparaged and if you can't say something positive keep it shut. IF opinions are asked for expect to get opinions, but don't offer them when they aren't requested, especially in someones build thread.

Actually I appreciate all forms of restored Mopars no matter what form they take. I appreciate a numbers matching concours restoration as much as a resto-mod or any hybrid in the middle. To me, finding beauty in a Mopar, no matter what form it takes, is as easy as falling off a log.

Hey Tallhair, i suppose at one time or another I have been a purist, at other times I am most probably a hater. But I guess at all those times i am really just another dick head with an opinion. Actually I am really neither a purist or a hater, I am just a man that loves all kinds of cars. The work and skills that other car buffs do to their cars excites me and I find it very interesting. I have never found knocking other folks items to be a good way to make friends, so if I really do not like something someone else has done I try to keep it to myself...when I can.

I try to not offend anyone here and hope I haven't. Even here lately i am finding some of R.C. posts much more to my liking. So there is a remote possibility that my one track mind is expanding. LOL!
