My 66 Coronet is dissembled. While I have the rear end out and stripped down, what, besides painting, should I do? Not sure how many bearings, seals, etc is has, so any help will be appreciated. I did find the tag still on it, 2.94. I want it to be virtually trouble free when I put it back in, so I would rather replace stuff now instead of later.

I pulled mine this winter and had a GOOD mechanic give it a thorough inspection. All came back good and the only thing I replaced was the clutch pack in the limited slip unit, just a safeguard. Had the unit powder coated while it was out and went over the entire rear suspension checking all of the bolts and bushings replacing what was needed and giving the rest a good cleaning. I would suggest you do the same as I agree with your thought process about checking it while it is out instead of doing it all over again.

Do you have a bench to put it on? I find it more difficult to tear them apart while it's laying on the floor. There are 6 bearings total in it. Was it making noise before you pulled it out? How many miles are on it? If there's not a million miles on it and was quiet, not leaking and you plan to keep the 2.94's, clean it up and stick it back in.

I did not get a chance to drive it before I started tearing it down, so I do not know if there are any problems. I don't mind spending some money on it before I put it back in. I would just hate to get it in and then have to take it back out. I realize there could be internal problems and in that case I would have to pull it back out. I did contact Cass at doctordiff.com and he told what parts I could replace if I wanted to while it was out. Thanks to all of you for responding to my post. I will post some photos of the rear end when I am finished.

I don't know much about changing the gears, but I would appreciate any insight members can give. I thought about that. The car will not be driven out of town much and since it is only 2 miles to work and 2 miles home, gas mileage is not a factor. I want it to "go fast"!!

I have 391's in my 69 Road Runner and that's about all the gear you want for any highway driving. (borderline too much) 355's are a good median ratio for a muscle car.
