Oil Pump Recommendation 512 CI

I'm putting together a 512 and am down to the last few items with an oil pump being one of those items. It's been a long time since I've put together a big block and not sure what the market has to offer these days. Are there ones to avoid?

What are you running...what do you recommend. It's a pretty important piece and I want to buy a robust/reliable one.

Street car??Race car or both?What oil pan will you use?

Street car....may take it to the strip once or twice just to see what it will do, but it will spend nearly all it's life on the street. I'm setting the rev limiter at 6500 RPM but I'll plan on shifting 5500-6000 most of the time.

I'm running a Mildon 7 quart pan like this.

That Milodon system is really nice. I have used those and Titan. Really, you would be fine with a regular Melling high volume pump as long as your top end restriction is set up as needed.

I used a Melling on mine, and so far so good! Just be sure to use good oil like Penn Grade... Kofells Place has it by the case.. If you head up to their shop, make sure you have a chat with Dave about his Flintstone Flyer cars....
Heck,,, He or one of his Sons would be a great person to ask about oil pumps!
Did you go with Full groove, 3/4 Groove bearings in the engine, or standard type?

Also, have a look at his "Garage Sale" items... Might be something interesting you could use..

I'm still milking this build Jim. I'm trying to fund it through selling parts....but that takes time. I e-mailed the builder to get a final assembly cost, break in and dyno tune. I figured I put this much money in it, I would like the extra assurance it is done right. If it was a stock 440, I would probably slap it together myself. I'm not sure which bearings went in it.....they came with the 440 source kit and he assembled it.

I was thinking Melling but didn't know if they were still as reputable as before. Thanks for the feedback Rev and Jim (aka 67..).
 
I am running a stock pressure and stock volume pump by Melling. If the bearing clearances are correct you do not need a high volume pump.

As far as quality, take it apart deburr the holes and measure the rotor clearances. I would change "correct bearing clearance" to "that if the bearing clearance is not increased over stock". Correct clearace is debatible upon use. A wise man once said " if you have too much bearing clearance you only will know, If you don't have enough everyone will know". A little extra flow, not pressure, on a street/strip motor is a nice back-up. The slight HP loss will never be noticed.

I seems the Melling high volume pump was the unit of choice. My motor builder recommended it also, so that's what I bought.

He sent me a link of a twin turbo 451 he just finished for a 67 valiant. 955 hp at 7000 rpm, and 795 ft-lbs torque at 4000. I think the motor was 525 HP before the turbos with a torquer intake and unported edelbrock RPM heads. They didn't spend too much time trying to make the HP on the carb alone because they knew they were going to force feed it. Here's the link....man that motor sings at 7000 rpm.

His shop is Level Performance in Fremont, Ohio....he's a member here (DLevel) putting together a light yellow 70 bee with a mint green c stripe (factory colors). He builds a lot of dirt track motors and it's always fun to go over to his shop to see what's new.

Is he using a stock iron block? If he is that's a crap load of HP. I'm sure he has the ProGram cross bolt caps and a good crank.
 
I used the Melling Hi Volume oil pump on my 451, and it has worked great so far! 2 seasons of racing, plus street miles. No issues.
