If your sat/rr/gtx game factory with vinyl roof what color would the roof b underneath? Black/grey primer/ color of the rest of the car? Thanks guys

The whole car was painted then the Vinal top was installed.

My car has factory installed vinyl roof and its purple under the vinyl but its not on either of the fender tags. So I assumed one of the previous owners had the factory guys install a white top at a time after production. Not sure how I am going to restore the car I like the white top but not sure it was produced like that. Wish I had a build sheet lol

I just had my RR repainted. I left the area under the vinyl primed, not painted. Just my preference to do it that way

Not much help here. My GTX came with a factory black vinyl roof. The car is factory painted maroon. How would I know what color it is under the roof? Is there a way to tell?

So, your car has a vinyl top but the code for a vinyl top is not on your fender tag?

If that's the case, then it sounds like someone had a vinyl top installed at some point after the car was purchased... Because if it's not on the fender tag then it didn't come from the factory with a vinyl top.

My red car had a white vinyl top and the fender tag has the code for a full vinyl top in white. And yes, they painted the whole car body color and then installed the tops on them. Mine was red under the white top and it was an all original car when I got it.

Yea that's what I meant by factory installed after the car was produced. Not sure how I want to go back though. Do you guys prefer slick tops or vinyl? Mine would be a purple car with white int. And white roof.

A Satellite? a Road Runner? or a GTX?
For me to give a proper answer.

I really like canopy tops on these car's. My first car had one and I converted this car to match my first one.

Then if it came with a full Vinyl top in White that's what I would go with, or a White Canopy top if that's what it came with.

I left off full tinted glass. The vinyl top is not on either fender tag but was factory installed so I assume at a later date. Or sometime after it rolled off the assembly line. Thats why I am on the fence about putting it back. Since not on either tag I cant say for sure when it was put on. But the car sat for 20 some years so I am sure it was put on in the 70s. And there is purple paint under my top which has been removed

This is from my post on Building a Mopar Hope it helps

No color coat is applied to the roof of cars that will receive a vinyl roof, greatly cutting the use of expensive finish paint. Vinyl roofs are installed in the Paint Shop after a car's exit from the baking oven. This includes our sample SuperBird, which passes through the adhesive spray booth, then gets its mandatory black vinyl roof, specially-cut to fit the semi-fastback rear window plug. They may also apply decorative stripes to other models, particularly if the stripes are installed before body fittings that cover portions of the stripes. Station wagon woodgrain decals are applied by Paint Shop workers.

If I'm now reading you correctly your saying it's not on the fender tag???
Your car came off the line without the V-top Code on the tag but then you say it left the assembly line with it??? How do you know this information?
If that is the case IT DID NOT come off the line with it. Do you have a Broad Cast Sheet for this car??? That will tell you 100% how that car left the line.

I just re-read EVERYTHING you posted:
the car had a white V-top with purple paint under it.
It's not coded for it and you don't have a Broad Cast Sheet.
That means it was added later in life, could be when it arrived at the selling dealer and a customer said I'll pay you X to install one or a day after he bought it or 20 years after he bought it.
So do what you want it's your car!!!
There is no hard and fast recipe for this.

I think from factory, vinyl top cars were never totally painted, just what got oversprayed all around. They were installed over primer saving bucks on paint. That's whay you'll easily find all rusted roof skins

Just took the factory top off my Charger and it was primer. It was modified for a sunroof at the factory but underneath that primer was primer. Factory vinyl top. The telling point may be how your mouldings are attached. Years ago we had stud rivets for the clips but they still look like a rivet with a stem hole in the center. The factory studs for your mouldings wouldn't have that. Usually car dealers didn't use the factory mouldings to add a top because they added to the price on their end. Just some ideas.

Years ago I owned a E-5 red U code '73 Charger SE with a white vinyl top and factory manual sun roof, power windows, slap stick console etc. ( I Wish I still had it). I purchased it from the original owner and it only had 48K miles on it at the time which was July 1983.

That car had gray paint under the vinyl. It was the factory dip paint where the whole body is submerged in a large vat of paint. At the edges of the vinyl where the red paint met against the vinyl top there was red overspray. They did not paint under the vinyl top area as this would have been a costly waste of materials and time.

I have found this same treatment found on every original car when I removed the vinyl top for restoration. The only other thing you will find besides the grayish green colored dip paint is the yellow adhesive used when the vinyl top was installed.

I hope this helps answer your question.

Yea it does. Mine has purple under it because it was later added by an owner of the car( as I stated not on either fender tag but definatley factory applied at a later date). Just curious how did the manual top work? Like a window crank on your roof?

You could push it up in the recessed pocket area when you were done cranking.

The handle looked like this one. I found this picture of a part that was advertised as a GM part. I don't remember the handle being flat on two sides, but it may have been. Hope this helps.

You turned the crank handle to open or close the sun roof. You could stop it in any position in between fully open or fully shut.
