I bought my Charger a while ago, and I'm trying to figure out what it would have looked like from the factory. As far I know, it's Y2 yellow with A/C, 318 2bbl and heavy duty 727 transmission .

Lynch Road tags are harder to decode.

Not everything is coded.

We have a resident expert member- 69coronetrt, that's really good with the "gate sequence" numbers on the top row.

318 cars came with the 904 and not the 727 TorqueFlite (as far as I know)
Mine had a 727. Not sure why, but it does. The original owner WHO bought the car brand new says the transmission has never been replaced.

Ok, so here is what I know.

17=GATE number
156= BASE number
244005 = body sequence production number.

All of the above are related to production of the Body In White or bare shell of the car.

177= engine assembly = B body 318-2bb with A/C and automatic transmission.

981= rear axle assembly. Not sure of the specifics but...B body rear end. It's an 8.25 rear end with 2.71 gears; no sure grip. The brake size would also be included in this assembly number but I do not know what size they are.

053= transmission assembly number = 3681053= 727 automatic transmission for a 72-73 B or C body; 318/360

G11 = Tinted glass all round
V1W = White vinyl top
U = Spec for USA market built for sale in the US
H51 = A/C

Nah they are easy once you know what you are looking at.

Geeze...nothing like a little pressure ;) and I'm far from an 'expert'. I, too, learned something from this tag.

Research continues.....

I have a question 69Coronetrt (sorry to hi jack). In the sequence number, does the 'C' mean anything? Production line number for instance, or is it just part of the sequence number? Its also a 1973 Dodge Charger built at St Louis plant. Just curious.

It's simply an internal station number. There were various "stations" throughout the plant where sub assemblies were put together for an individual car. "Stations" would include areas like dashes and interiors. That's why you'll find broadcast sheets attached to dashes or in the seats. The sheet generated at that station for that subassembly was attached or inserted into the assembly so people could match up the sub assembly with the correct car.

STL happened to use letters. I've seen sheets from the STL plant start with an A, B or C. Some plants, like Hamtramck, used numbers to identify stations.

I think it's pretty clear from the tag above that the 727 did come behind some 318's. It depends on the application.

Awesome, I learnt something there. Thank you very much.

Thank you so much guys! That really helps me to envision what the car would have been like from the factory.
