4:10 Rear End - Too Much?

I should have said my car is 727 with 10" converter. 4 spd should have lower RPM.

My street-legal WO, has 33's and a 5.13 gear. It actually cruises around town, pretty nice. It's kinda "peppy".

I also had 3:91 gears in my 67 GTX and I opted out for 3:55 as I did drive my car on the freeway. It sucks to have all that power and get passed on the freeway by a Honda. The other option to go with 3:91 or 4:10 would be a Tremec 5 speed trans for $2k to $3.5k. The Tremec has that extra gear you are looking for when crusing at 65mph and 3500 rpm!

Probably no need to jump in as you have received a lot of good advice! Apples and oranges here; but I had the 3:23's in my '63 Fury (318) for years and recently when it came time to replace I got talked into the 3:55's which if I had my druthers I'd go back to the 3:23's. Yeah a nice little difference from the start but I do more driving at higher speeds living in the sticks to get anywhere than kicking the car around from the stop signs. I did that 30 years ago and at my age is just a waste of time and gas...

I should also mention that my brother in laws '68 GTX with a 440 4 spd was not as loose as as my auto.

Agree with everything that's been said but will also add that it's no fun in a standard because all you get done doing is shifting. Since I have a massive overdrive ratio I ran 4:30s for 1 summer where I could cruise 70 mph @ 1,900 rpm but still didn't like them. Shifting every 50 ft doesn't equal fast although it would blow the tires off threw the first 3 gears, 3:55s are my favorite.[/QUO
I have a shot at a 4:10 gear for my 1969 Road Runner, 440 (not A12). 4 Speed car. it's a 3:23 rear end which just gives no snap to the car at all. I worry 4:10 is just way too much for the 440. Anyone running this in their car, and are you happy with it?
I run 3.55's in my 68 RR 440/4-speed and seems to be a good all around gear, burn lots of rubber when I want to and also cruise within reason.

I like 3.55s, I run 72 mph at 3000 rpm on the hiway. RPMs will be lower when I order new tires. Going 28 or 29 inch next currently running 26 inch 275 50 15 bfg drag radials. Still turns mid 12s with a mild 440 in my Coronet R/T. Good Luck!

440 & 727 Trans with a low first gear, Gear Vendor, 4:10 gear, 30" Tire, best of Both Worlds !! LOl

OH Love the 4:10 but going a bit more Aggressive to 4:56 Gear !!

some years back i did some fooling around with rear gears in my 69 r/t. the engine didn't have serious mods (unleaded conversion using kb184 pistons, stock valve '906's with home pocket port, stock exhaust, mopar 272-.455 cam). i tried a 3.23, a 3.55. and a 3.91 at the track; car ran quicker with the 3.23. for a torque engine the lower gears are more nuisance than value adding. in high torque engines low gears work the engine instead of letting the engine do the work. i have a friend who built a 508 stroker, single 4bbl, mild roller, eddie heads, and stock cast exhaust for his '67-4150lb charger. he ran 11.60's at 120mph+ with a 3.23 gear.

Go for torque and 3.23.
You'll still be able to snatch chirp on 1-2,
but you won't have to listen the engine ask you for the " next gear" at 70 mph.
You might still be able to watch the gas gauge move, but it won't be quite so annoying.
Depends, as others point out, whether you want to drag race or use the car to go on a vacation trip sometimes.

Guess I should expand on the information I provided. To be honest the car rarely sees the highway for more than half an hour at a time. It gets pulled out for cruise nights and going to the ice cream store ;) It's pretty much a stock 440. My concern is really the driving "aggravation" factor vs. "kickass" fun factor. As an alternative, if someone out there has a 3:55 or 3:91 and wants a 4:10 - let me know.

If you don't go on the freeway much, a 4.10 is just fine. Dana gear ratios are limited.

Even with a 3.23 it should have some snap. I'm curious what the engine combination is. Close to stock, mild build or....? Even a low compression 440 can have plenty of punch if the tune is right.
"Punch" is a relative word! ;)
It is a generally stock motor for the most part, and I guess my past experiences have been mostly 400+hp small block stuff with minimum 3:55 gears. I just find it takes a few seconds to wind the thing up. Just not snappy or the snappy I'm used too.

I pulled my 4.10s out & replaced them with 3.55s. Depends on what you want I guess but I wanted better highway driving. 3.91s may be a choice for you.

What do ya mean "budget"?? I'm a poor folk too which is why I had to go the salvage route.

Budget, as in stock with no extras. :) ...and only building to what won't worry the Mrs.

the factory rated peak power on a 375hp 440 at 4600rpm. they probably crap out a little before that 4600rpm, so that makes a 4.10 a couple of steps below useless; maybe a 3.55 at most.

the engine in the pic will get my 65 coronet a little wigglely in the road at the 1-2 shift and that's with a 3.23 gear and 28" tall tires. people have a tendency to over gear these torque engines.
