Great Price on a Sure Grip Center... If You Live in CA.

Not bad, I paid 200 for my 489 3.23 sure grip .. was supposed to be good, loud whine under load. Found slop in the crush sleeve, installed crush sleeve eliminator .... still noisey, and now the cone sure grip is binding on slow turns ... not a good used center section experience ! Looks like a complete Dr diff unit will be in my future ...

The exact reason I just got a unit from dr diff, I thought about peicing together a dana or 9" but by the time it was all said and done I would've been into it for just as much as a new unit

Yeah not bad, it's in Santa Rosa
that's the North Bay part of the SF bay Area
still a min of 150+ miles west on me...

I've bought them 489 & 742's carriers cheaper, than $350 many times,
One of the many perks {car wise} of being in Calif...
I'd never ever pay some of them prices I see on E-Scam $750-$1000
for a 3.55:1 OE carrier & SG, hell I saw one with 741 carrier open dif.
2.76:1 for $475, that dudes smoking crack or drinking the bong water...

It is what it is I guess...

But I don't blame the guy in that add you showed either,
they are expensive to ship, have to be crated up or put in a carrier,
"most people are way to cheap"to foot the bill, or cover shipping costs,
maybe Fastenal's/3rd party freight deal, could ship it a bunch cheaper...

In that scenario; {it's sold already anyway}
If you can find someone in the area to pick it up & drop it off to be shipped...

But in the scheme of things, better than paying $500-$600 back east...
And still having to cover expensive shipping costs...

I shipped a 3.23 clutch sure grip unit from California to Tennessee. It cost $168 to ship!

The guy really wanted it too. $400 for the unit, $168 to ship!

Used to go out to the pick and pull yards and get them for 39.50 during the mid 80's! The good times....

39.50!!! Jeez I'm $700 CAD into my 742 with 4.10 and suregrip and I thought that was a deal!

40 bucks back in 85 is more like 90 today but still, it's cheap! I'd bring em home and tear them down the check the Sure Grip unit and if it looked good, it'd go back together and then into a car for a test run. If it ran fine, I'd advertise it for 200 bucks if it was a 42 and 250 for an 89. I'd keep the 41's for myself and would abused the hell out of them to prove that they too would take it. Now, the 42's go for about the same money.

So you think the 41s can take a beating? Never really considered the one I have as a spare because all I have heard is they are weak.

Over 30 years ago a magazine (Car Crap) did an article on which of the most common Mopar 8 3/4's were the strongest and which one was the weakest. Well, the 41 lost but if you do a comparison with other rears with close to the same size pinion shaft, you might be surprised. And so what if the 89 has a tapered shaft. Look at the size of the rear end yokes. You only have a course and a fine spline with all 3 having the same size fits. Any how many pinion shafts have you seen broken? The tapered shaft does help reduce flex which should help reduce gear teeth breakage but if you launch with enough rpm with a stick or use a trans brake, you're going to break something eventually. I've seen them all broken lol but it hasn't been all that many. Generally, it's the teeth on the ring gear that fail. In recent times Hot Rod redid the same story and recited it almost word for word lol. If I'm going to do some serious racing, I'm going to shove in a Dana 60. Many swear by the 8 3/4 even when they get into the mid to low 10's but once I'm in the low 11's, the 8 3/4 is coming out.

Before this convo I had read a lot about the 42 and 89 so I took out my 41 and replaced it with a 42. Now I'm thinking with my 400-425hp wouldn't have made a difference! Was going to sell the 41 but maybe I'll just keep it now.

I'm for sure keeping my 741, 2.76 open chunk .. if I ever get the itch for a 1000+ Mile trip it will be going back in !
