Z bar spring thingy?

Then the nut will be on backwards per service manual.
I think I'm going to try and drill the missing hole on my z-bar so I can use the snap ring (the one that straddles it and holds the plastic bearing internally (the one on the frame rail side).
When I took all this apart, it didn't have one at all (modified z-bar, remember). The clutch worked fine, but I don't want this stuff moving and possibly pulling off a ball stud.

You may want to put on car before you drill a hole. pun. If you remember about where nylon bushing are located before you put on the car. You could drill a series of holes then pick the one that works.
 
Seriously !?!?

1) place bushing halves over outer ball stud and insert in z bar
2) place bushing halves over inner ball stud (on bellhousing)
3) push z bar over inner ball/bushing halves until groove aligns with holes - install clip
4) position outer ball stud on frame bracket and tighten nut.

Now did that really need a "pro" ??
Hell, there are only 25 or more components to this according to the diagram. Some tiny and waiting to eject to lower earth orbit never to be found. Simply defines simple.
 
Those bushings will be a fixed distance apart - determined by the ball studs. The clipped one ensures the arm is properly aligned to the clutch fork. The one on the frame will have movement since it isn't retained by a clip. If there is one hole in the z bar then its possible to assume you could drill straight through from that one. Strange that it only has one hole though - was the arm rewelded in that area?

It's got one of the original holes, so it's a matter of figuring out how far around the opposite hole is. The clip, installed, will tell me that approximately.

Yep. It appears to me someone took a z-bar from another application (in my case, from what I can tell, the z-bar came from a later model) and re-welded the arm for the clutch pedal side. It's crude, but worked quite well before.
Unfortunately, the welding took out one of the snap ring holes.

A quick rudimentary check with the ball stud and plastic inserts showed that this hole satisfactorily lined up the snap ring with the groove in the inserts, so that the seal was safely inside the z-bar tube.
Now to get a hole on the other side to match...

I ran what appeared to be a close size drill bit through the tube to see what it looked like and, wouldn't you know it, I saw what appeared to be the remnants of the old opposite hole inside the tube.
Drilling commenced and the bit went right through like butter. :)
Ok, now to deburr the inside and do a rudimentary test fit.

Lastly, I noticed what appeared to be a threaded hole further down the tube for a zerk fitting. Ok...

Done deal. I'll give it a coat of satin black. Tomorrow is installation day.

Any pics of the Zbar with that spring seal holder thingy, that wraps around the bar, in its position? I can't figure out its purpose.
Go towards the end of this thread and you'll see plenty of pics. I just went thru this procedure this evening. :)
 
Hello, I’m very thankful for this thread . In one picture you will see my z-bar the end that mounts to the bell housing and it is sitting very deep on the ball shaft . Now would that be a smoking gun of a problem for why my linkage is binding in the other pic ?

Sorry for bringing this old but very helpful thread up again.
Is the Z-Bar completly filled with grease prior install or do only the moving parts get a coat?
