Had to pull my engine from the shop cause he's taking too long. He's a 1 man show, and ALWAYS busy, really great engine builder, but he's had my stuff for almost 2 months. he said he could have it done by Friday, but I chose to just bring it home. I don't want a rush job, and that's what it would be. I pick up the block tomorrow as he still needs to install the cam bearings. Then I can get started!

Kinda sucks...but kinda good too! You'll know exactly what was done

Dry fit your cam in it especially since he is gonna rush your cam bearing install. I like the pdp17 bearings

He has my cam so he can check the bearings. He did mention big block Mopars are kind of pain.

I've read (probably on this forum) Chrysler line bored the cam bearings after installation, hence the poor fit after replacement. Buy a 3-corner bearing scraper and "relieve" the shiny spots left by the cam journals during fitment until binding goes away.

Got the block back late this afternoon. He got the cam bearings installed, said they were a pain in the ***. Also he installed the brass freeze plugs, oil galley plugs and oil pump shaft bushing.

I finished painting the block this evening, I'll post pics in the morning.

Pics!

I did get rid of the casting flash in between the lifters and up front by the oil pump drive. It's painted cast iron gray. Should look good with the light argent silver.

Bob is the man especially with cylinder heads but I build my own paul. No waiting years on end.

This is gonna be my first engine build by myself. I've done a few with buddy's, my dad, and shop teacher, but this one will be mono on mono. Let the fight begin, lol!!

Did you grind on the block before or after the galley plugs were in? If after, you should pull the plugs and clean the galleys again. You should probably do that anyway if someone else put the plugs in. Take nothing for granted. If the passages are dirty you're finished before you even start.

I did the casting flash before it went to the machine shop. Also cleaned out the oil galleys before the plugs went in.

if its just machine work then it wade at vic hub's machine in hayward then . just a few weeks and your ready to fit and assemble . on customers builds i like the machinist to fit and assemble just for his gar'un tee on no issues no leaks . if its for myself , i just get the machine work done and i spend the time fitting and assembling . gromm's is not cheap either . last head porting i had done by dave story in ky . he has gotten 808 hp from a 468 wedge on one 850cfm carb and it lived . my cam guy turned me on to him a few years back . he did my 470 stage 6 alum mw heads . and a pair of my bonny saltflats heads for my 354 chrysler , iron ones . and j roch did the bottom end . we bought bump'd it to a 371 for xo class . wade will be doing my machine work on the 470 bottom end . unless gromm's can cut me a deal , cash always goes farther then checks , lol . but gromm's did my desoto heads for the salt , a match to what the markey bros ran on their 1000 hp 260ci destroked 291 desoto . again for a salt class 59 or older engine 325 or less xxo . both are early hemi style engines , and will be blown with 8 71's . been parts gather'n for some time now for these engines are for one racer in two different engine classes .

Got the crank and rms installed today. Numbers were good, so I moved forward. Waiting on piston ring compressor to show up, meanwhile I'll get the rods/pistons/rings assembled.

That's great, my first was when I was 18 years old and my dad wouldn't help... never leaked a drop and never failed me. Because of that experience I've never paid anybody to build a motor and have never had a failure... knock on wood. Very rewarding when you hear them come to life for the first time not to mention it's just fun bolting a motor together.
