i am working on getting a 318 running decently. Has a QFT 600 CFM carb. I installed new plugs, wires, distributor cap, dizzy and starter (among MANY other things). Used a timing light and manually set initial timing by hand ( bumping distributor) to get the engine able to start. Set the carb up by putting fuel floats at mid point in sight glass for front and rear lines, turned in adjustment screws on carb til tight, then backed off 1 and 1/2 turns. Started car up, black smoke all over. Turned off car and hooked up a vacuum gauge to carb.
With vacuum gauge installed, started car, readjusted distributor (bumping by hand) to get 13-15 IN/Hg (sweet spot is 17-22 IN/Hg), turned carb adjustment screws all the way then backed them out each only 1/2 turn. BOOM! 18-20 IN/Hg. Sounds great, idles at 1k rpm, in gear, sits at 800rpm's, can power brake (could never before).
Now the problem, when I push the gas pedal down (adjusted per instructions on here) while driving, car just bogs down and feels like it is missing. No loud pop or backfire, just a hesitation here and hesitation there, when driving.

Pull into my driveway, put into park, idle is still at 1k, now car gets a shake to it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Stuck advance weights? Bad vac advance diaphragm? Spark scatter?
I retimed to eliminate scatter spark, newer distributor (dont believe the diaphragm, only 90 days old).
I think the issue may actually be within the carb. Hesitation upon acceleration from cruising speed is the problem. Issue with secondary's possibly?

Go ahead and give it more timing. For whatever reason, the 318s I have just love timing. I was having the same issue in my 82 dodge truck last year, 318 4 barrel...

Anyways it idled great, had 10* initial timing, but it wouldnt drive faster than 10 mph without stepping on it's dick. I don't remember what initial is now, but total timing at 3,500 rpm and up is about 32-33* total timing. Try giving that 318 more advance... keep on giving it more until it runs good... but not enough to pre detonate.

Thanks again for the info, I will give it a try today and see what I get.

Moved distributor to readjust timing. Ran good, but not great. Set back to where I originally had it. Stumped now

Carb problem.
Sounds like it is getting lean while driving check the secondaries opening point.
Bogging is usually fuel.
Please set timing at total timing between 2600 and 3000 rpm to 34 degrees with the vacuum advance disconnected and about 55 with vacuum advance attached.

My 73 318 with a .430 inch Mopar cam loves a lot of advance, total at 3000 rpm with the light gun and on the tape is about 38 deg. it has a crisp pedal to it on acceleration from a standing stop. I usually test on the road and bring my distributor wrench with me to adjust and retest .. good luck
