Bad Advice

My 81 turbo trans am isn't running right, not getting gas after the accelerator pump gives its spray. I'm pretty sure there's varnish built up inside of it not letting enough gas flow through the venturi. Had someone insist that the only issue could be a trashed fuel filter. Told them no, because the accelerator pump would spray when the pedal was pushed time and time again. They then over to my car with me knowing, pulled the fuel filter out (clean by the way), held it up to my face and said "THIS is what's wrong with your car". Told them no, started the car with the fuel filter off and it still wouldn't run right, surprise surprise. Later, they showed me a picture of a tore down carb, said my carburetor had idle rods in it just like the one in the picture, and that they are what's wrong with my car. Told them they aren't allowed to touch my car anymore.

Couple weeks ago, that same person heard that popping dents was easy with an oxy torch and a cool wet rag. They grabbed a butane torch, heated up a minor hail dent on my hood to almost red hot, and dropped the rag on it. Perplexed with the still existing dent and a small area of slightly warped hood, they moved about a foot over to another dent, still no success and a new slightly warped area. (car has a "patina" hood, so paint isn't an issue). They tried on the last few dents on the hood. No success, so they moved onto the fender. This time, they heated the area up red hot and dropped the rag on it. Didn't work, so they did it again. Saw what they were doing and put it to a stop. Now have a nicely warped fender that still has a hail dent on it.
------------------------you let anyone take a torch to ur car?

*Torque it until it strips, then back off a 1/4 turn.
*Hold a fast idle, then slowly pour BON AMI down the carburetor.
*Pull out.
(Never tried that last one)

Many years ago, I was looking at a 67 Barracuda on a used car lot. The sales weasel was insisting that this was the "special" 273 Hemi....

I bought a dodge truck with what the guy said was a “high output” 71 440 (actually a 77). He then tells me it has a very heavy duty transmission. I asked if it had the 727. He said no it’s bigger it’s a 827 maybe even a 927........ This was after he tried to convince me that the two barrel bolted to the adapter was a special 4 barrel with a high horsepower spacer.

Not necessarily bad advice but... I'm not able to do tires and alignments at my house yet so that's about the only things I have to take the cars out for. Needed tires on the car and figured we will get an alignment with the new tires. Wife takes the car to one of the quicky tire shops to get this done. Guy tried to up sell her both sides inner and outer tie rods, two hubs, lower control arm and new front rotors and pads. She told the guy just do the tires and alignment my husband will take care of the rest if needed. He then proceeded to back track and tell her how those things are not needed just yet but in the near future. I stopped by his shop on my way home from work and finished what needed to be said.

I worked for one of those up sell places many years ago, it disgusting how they prey on people that don't know any better.

I worked at a goodyear back in the 80's and every single car that came in needed an idler arm and a center link.

I can probably see maybe 30-40% actually needing an idler arm, but how many center links has anyone ever seen bad?

Not car related, but comes from the same guy all my other quotes come from.

"You can go to jail for debt"
"Constitution doesn't say that income tax is legal"
"16th amendment isn't actually a part of the constitution, it was never accepted by the states"

Was looking at a deep air cleaner housing on a 69 Chevelle SS and remarked that it sure was a deep one. My pal just said," yep". The kid next me on the other side said, " yah, that's because it's an oil bath type cleaner, it needs to be able hold two quarts." We both looked at him with smiles. He said, " What?" Too funny...

Guy at work was telling me how American Motors 360 engines were actually Ford blocks with Buick heads. Amazing stuff I never knew.

The AMC 304 does have some interesting similarities with a ford 302.

I ran into a kid(early 20s) at a party years ago. Insisted his uncle had a camaro with a 427 hemi in it. Said hemi right on the valve covers. I said around the spark plug tubes? He replied what spark plug tubes. I left it at that.

I have had several people look at my gated Winters shifter and ask if it is an auto or a stick. I always reply both.

Oh that was Autozone....
Same thing except, “The Dodge Magnum is a truck, so it can’t be a ‘79!!!”

Me “Please don’t yell, I’m right here and if you would like to see what I’m driving, (as I point to it through the large window) it’s right there, so tell me again what I’m driving again.....”

I was working in a gm part dept in 1977. A Customer asked me for an universal joint for a 1964 Valiant. I told him that he should go to the nearest Dodge Dealer. His answer was that it's "universal" meaning ons size fit all. My manager then told him "explain me why i have in stock 10 different size?"

Case closed lol
