Indentify 4speed?

Just acquired a 69 road runner 383, 4-speed. How do you identify what kind or model of four-speed it is? No fender tag not much information from the seller. Thanks
 
no tag on the tranny?
get all the casting numbers off the trans

Assuming you're referring to a 4 speed manual? A-833 is the only 4 speed used in cars.

unless someone swapped a 4 speed from a truck into it. which is easy to identify. If there is a PTO cover, its the truck trans, NP435 or NP445(if it has a granny Low on the shifter, its a 435, if its a standard 1-4 shifter, then its the NP445). No PTO cover, its the 833. Plus the truck 435/445 are really stubby transmissions. Crawl under and take some pictures of it. Make sure to get a picture of your shifter pattern too.

As for the 833 id, fairly simple. There will be numbers stamped and cast into the transmission, on 68 and later transmissions, there will be a raised pad with a bunch of numbers. This is the trans build date (10,000 day calendar).
 
Also, if it's original to the car, there will be a small 1/2" x 3" long flat spot near the bottom of the transmission that will have the last digits of the vehicle VIN number, I believe passenger side & I think '68 was the first year they did that (?)

Ok guys, heres a few pics, looks like an 833?
Anyway, i have a leak...(of course seller never mentioned), but it APPEARS it could be around the i assume what might be a re verse light switch? I dont know what else would be wired to tjis tranny, unmless the speedo is electronic? Its located on the drivers side.....

Thanks for the help fellas.....anyone experience oil leaks with theirs? Was thinking of replacing the reverse switch since its wet with oil to start with a possible simple fix?

probably just a worn out oring or seal. heck, its possible its simply loose. Seen that before too

drain the fluid and run a magnet through it and look for copper flakes
new fluid- you have no idea what's in there

probably be doing that on Saturday, good idea....but since the front end will be up on ramps, I assume when I go to refill, I wont have a good idea with "finger in the hole" method of checking level?
 
maybe someone can chime in on how much it takes from a full drain and what modern lube to use
I have not worked with MOPAR 4 speeds in 30 years and I had a trans guy that did the work so not much help
I do know that some lubes can be too slippery so the synchros do not work as well
but a lot of synchros got slick shifted anyway
 
I did search that, found most like Pennzoil Synchromesh Gl4 lube.....just not sure how much to put in when car front us up in the air...

1. for the leak, just pull out the plug, clean with carburetor cleaner & replace the o-ring and see what you get. that is the reverse light switch for sure if it has wires running to it.
2. you need about 3 quarts of gear lube, probably 75w-90 or similar & no need for any additive. Some gear lubes now have posi traction additive already in them.
3. fill the trans until it runs out the top/side filling hole and that's the correct level

Hi Purple... yes that is my intent, am aware of filling til seeps out side hole, BUT since car front is up on ramps not sure the "level" will be correct without dropping car down again, checking for seepage, then jacking back up again to fit my fat arse under to keep filling!

Make sure the lub you use is rated GL-4, NOT GL-5 as it is hard on your brass synchros. Also unless I missed it, no one mentioned that 833's come in two versions (very hard to tell while installed), the most likely version is the 23 spline input shaft, but the 440/hemi trans had the 18 spline input shaft. 383 cars were equipped with the 23 spline version thus it is much more common. Just my .02.
