changed center housing and new u joint with clips dont want to fit in pinion? pinion is 2 3/8 moog u joint? fits without clips what to do,buy a different brand, never had this problem before. 489 rear end . thanks for any help. gears are original 1969 stamp on gear 3:23

Vise and BFH time they will fit. Depending how the old joint was removed the yoke can get distorted. When it does clips will not fit as you have found out.

Had the same issue recently. Installed a 489 pig with big yoke. Was previously running a stepped U-joint. Had the same problem as you when reinstalling shaft with new joint. I "shaved" clips slightly with coarse roloc disc to get them to fit.

Silly question, but did you pull the U-joint caps off to make sure one of the needle bearings didn't get out of place and is laying in the bottom of the cap (keeping it from going on all the way)?

I agree with Frnknsteen.
But also, my u joints came with different thickness clips.

Some yokes have cup indents built in.

yep I checked

Some yolks have recesses for the clips. Use a wire brush and make sure there's nothing in them. I'm not a fan of hammering in - they should fit.

got it in,used a file on inside edge of yoke. just to clean and remove any rust, vert tight and no hammer needed.
