My engine in my car is a 383 2barrel with a single exhaust just as it came from the factory. Ive noticed the tail pipe next to the gas tank gets extremely hot. I cant touch it. Also the trunk floor right above the pipe gets so hot i cant touch it. Im worried about the gasoline in the tank getting to hot as a result.
The timing is ok, the carb seems adjusted ok. I was wondering should i wrap the pipe with that header wrap I've seen or is there another issue going on
The other thing is this being a big block is a single exhaust to restrictive and would that build up heat? Thanks yet again for the help

My guess it that the tank has been that hot from day one. If you are worried about a fire, it's gonna take an ignition source (spark or flame) to ignite it, not heat. That said, I suppose header wrap can't hurt anything.

Agree with Ranger 16. Grab an infrared temperature gun (their cheap) and take a reading to set your mind at ease.

Yeah, header wrap wouldn't hurt, but I "suspect" you might be running a little rich on your fuel mixture OR your timing isn't as good as you think it is. In my experience, you should be able to hold you hand on the tail pipe....warm, but not too hot...maybe a little bit.

The pipe is hot. The air 1/8" away from it is warm. 1/4" is barely warmer than ambient air. Don't worry about it unless it's less than 1/8" away. Fuel won't light because the metal is warm to the touch.

I've been under my car after driving it and touched the exhaust pipes....The sweat from my head, arm, hand will result in a sizzle sound. That is hot. It has not had an effect on how the car runs though.
The 383 with a single exhaust is fine if you are not wrapping it up to 5800 rpms at every shift. If you cruise it and rarely go full throttle, a 2 1/4" single pipe is not optimal but not harmful either. I love a nice V8 rumble though so I add dual exhaust even to 318 cars!

I agree with these guys i can feel the heat from mufflers radiating through the floor boards. Years back my friend was behind me on the interstate on his motorcycle, he moved way back. I asked him why he backed off on highway, he said man there's no escaping the heat coming off that thing. It was summer day now been around few cars, but to me thoses old mopars just make and hold a ton of heat, your pipes getting warm like that will also dry any moisture out all good old mopes.

I love a nice V8 rumble though so I add dual exhaust even to 318 cars!

I always wondered: Does a dual exhaust and single exhaust actually sound different to the naked ear (assuming the same muffler(s) are used)?

Does the car have the original exhaust (original Muffler)? If so I would check to make sure that muffler was not causing back pressure which may cause excessive heat build up in the exhaust pipe. Sometimes overtime the baffles inside the muffler crumble from rust and plug up the flow through the muffler. Also a backfire can cause the muffler to distort the baffles causing the same result. Just a thought. I had this issue with my 73 RR with the original 45 year old exhaust system.

As suggested by Ranger 16 verify temp with an infrared thermometer.

Another thought.
You posted in another post that you were having issues with your car idling smoothly even though you just had the carb rebuilt.
Did you solve that issue? Because a clogged muffler/back pressure would also cause idle/carb issues.
