Does anyone know if the seal that is leaking from our shifter linkage is on the inside of the case or can we be lucky and it is on the outside. And what kind of seal is it and where to get one. Thanks.
 
Take off the case cover bolts and you’ll see how they come out.
 
Pull the side cover off is all. Then you can slide the shafts out. You can do that when its in the car.
 
It would be wise to consult the FSM because the interlock inside the side cover involves spring-loaded balls that can go flying and reinstalling the cover involves setting the reverse lever clearance.

The O ring is 5/8" OD by .100" thick.
 
If its your reverse lever leaking, think trans has to come apart to fix it.
 
Is that an aluminum case? If so then that is a different type of seal from an iron case and it is changeable from the outside. It is a plastic sleeve with both inner and outer o-rings - available from any hardware store.

It is the original numbers matching trans silver not painted black.
 
In that case you might try one of the "stop leak" products on the market, you've got nothing to lose.

Absolutely ridiculous idea. This is a transmission - not a radiator !!

The trans will need a complete teardown to replace that o-ring BUT 4-speeds are simple to rebuild and would take no more than a few hours. The worst part is removing and reinstalling the thing !!

The O ring is leaking because it has hardened/shrunk, an additive that makes the rubber swell (some folks use brake fluid) might stop the leak without the hassle/expense of an overhaul just to stop a leak.
 
If it's from the reverse shaft, the whole transmission's got to come apart.
 
Drain the oil. The side cover needs to come off. The tailstock and output shaft need to come out. The input and bottom custer can stay in place. The reverse shaft has to be tapped out. Then the reverse lever can be pushed out and the o-ring replaced. Then reverse the whole process. Use new gaskets on the tailstock and side cover. Use heavy grease to hold the rollers in the input shaft when you reinstall the tailstock assy.
