Voyager 2 has left the solar system!

Pretty amazing stuff. It boggles my mind to think there's an end to the universe and then it becomes something else.

my favorite things the past year is sending the mars rover to go dig on mars and the cassini spacecraft sending saturn images

End to our solar system, then it becomes space...
Space between other stars and solar systems...

I read that it's only leaving the "influence of the Sun's solar wind". Then it has to go maybe as much as 30,000 years to reach the edge of the Oort cloud (new one on me)…..THEN it will be outside of our solar system & heading towards another star(s). The Universe is BIG. Voyager is traveling something like 34,000 miles per hour (?).

I beg to differ, the edge of the solar system is the heliopause, because that is where the influence of the suns solar wind stops, and interstellar space begins and objects outside are not protected from cosmic radiation as they are inside the solar wind bubble, the heliosphere. If you wanted to included the ort cloud as the edge you could, but then the same argument could be made to also included the distance where the light from the sun is no longer visible as well, and that would me many thousands of light years, so for all practical purposes the heliopause is the edge.

Pretty cool to think 60's level technology has been able to survive such extremes for so long, and travel that far. Too bad our cars didn't get the same attention to detail.

JPL uses the Oort cloud as the borderline, as these particles orbit the sun and stay in our solar systems' general area.

Thanks idrivemopar & photon for new information....some say tomAto, some same tomaaato. Pretty darn cool anyway you look at it. I wonder if "Veeger" will come back one day to listen for whale songs? (reference to Star Trek movie)

Even if it doesn't come back, here is something to ponder, the space craft both carry the golden record with sounds and information from our planet, and even if we all disappear someday, these will be floating out in space for eternity so to speak unless they get hit by something, and may end up being the only thing that even indicates we existed.

Or as some have theorized, the golden record will give information to an alien species that will use that information against us.

Heh, heh, you said heliopause. Some terms we use in geology with a straight face.

orogeny
thrust fault
spreading ridge
horst and graben
overturned beds
cross-bedding
dry hole
subduction zone
cleavage
dike

If you ever get a chance get down to coco beach FL. and go visit the Kennedy Space Center a must see. they are real busy down there building new launch platforms...
