I want to remove both of my headrests. I have bucket seats. One of them easily pops out. The other won’t budge an inch up or down. What’s the deal ? Is there a trick to get it to come out or move? Also, we’re these originally adjustable ? I ask because even though one moves up and down easily. Neither one of them go all the way down ?

I had installed later 60's rests on my '63 buckets and they don't go all the way down by the lack of room on my early style seats b4 rest were out. I think some models may not fully drop to the rest to the seat as I recall. Harder then hell to move them, at least mine. Try squeezing the posts inward with a lot of effort and should move. Otherwise might try a ratchet nylon strap around the posts tighten until you see the posts inward stress and should be enough to lift them out.

Same problem on my 69 headrests. Someone suggested WD40 down the chrome shafts, push down, then pull up fast. Came right off.

Thanks, guys. I ll give your suggestions a try. It might help, to remove post bezels too. I’d really like for them to go all the way down. I think they would look better in that position. But, that might not be an option. My family had a couple early model 70’s Darts when I was young. Im positive those went all the way down. I can remember playing with them all of the time. Car I’m referring too now, is 69 Coronet.

Sure seem to recollect a certain type of head rest...sort of slight oval shaped, that didn't drop all the way to the top of the seat back. Might be wrong. Anyway, the ones I put in can't drop all the way unless I'd cut the posts down; but they're set for my head as set. I had a partial neck fusion years back and my doc said whiplash could be very bad news for me prompting me to add them in my '63. The way I can move them is to squeeze the posts inward with a heck of a lot of elbow grease...

I don't think they were meant to go all the way down on a 69 bucket seat. Here's a photo of my old headrest and a photo of the locking clip down inside the seat someone posted on the internet.

I don’t believe my 68 head rests go all the way down either. Never really tried it. They do pop out without too much effort though.

My headrest is exactly the same as the black one pictured above. Today, I considered a ratchet strap. But, that’s not going to work as the width between the post are simply not wide enough for a ratchet strap to work. Im considering removing the bezels. But, I’m afraid the piece pictured above might fall down inside the interior of the seat. Need to come up with a tool that allows me to squeeze the posts inward. Thought of using wire twisted by pliers. The big challenge is the headrest is only a few inches above top of seat. Not much room to squeeze the post together under that circumstance.

I should have mentioned my removing technique is with the install adding the rests on my car (not stock) and may not necessarily be the trick for you. It may involve moving the rests forward or backward to release the holding clips on the posts. There's a photo earlier here showing how those are secured. Might try that if you haven't.

The back of the 69 bucket seats are held on with one screw on each side at the bottom of the seat back. Remove the seat back and you will expose the catch. Maybe you can push in on the catch while tapping up on the bottom of the post to get the headrests out.

Thanks, guys. I ll take a look this weekend. But, I don’t think my seat back is accessible from the bottom. I could be wrong. If it is, I should easily be able to reach up in there. Because my seats are removed from the car.

I found this video. My car has the exact same bucket seats and headrests. According to this video. The headrests do infact go all the way down.

Unless one is really-really short, a headrest all the way down is of no use, just a better neck cracker..

Not to mention it overlooks the reason "head rests" were required from 1969 forward; anti-whiplash.

I like them better all the way up. To each his own.
Yeah, it makes the car look sporty when they are up. Regardless, I’m replacing my trim and it has to be removed in order to get the old trim off. Old trim is welded on there, lol !

Exactly the reason I went through the trials of installation on my old buckets post neck surgery as doc told me whiplash could end badly for me...
