Last year I bought a nice SFI approved transmission safety blanket for the Satellites 727. When I went to assess installation, I realized that my passenger side header collector literally touches the edge of the trans-pan. So, I didn’t install it. I’m now once again contemplating how important the blanket is. Transmission has a low-band apply valve body and a bolt-in sprag. My car makes approx. 525 hp and sees a max 6500rpm. Adding the blanket also adds about 15lbs, and will undoubtedly make the trans run hotter. Only upside is if the thing ever flies apart, the shrapnel should be better contained.

How important do you guys see a safety item like this on a mild street/strip car?

I mean you already have it but if you’re willing to make another purchase id think a scatter shield would be a better option.

Although maybe a blanket would do better at containing fluid in the event of a catastrophic failure.

The transmission blanket will NOT contain any fluids. Any fluids would just leak out the front, back and sides. It is NOT a diaper.
My tranny MAY run hotter with the blanket, but, I works fine (with extra heat ? )...both with my old transmission and my new A&A Tranny
I installed one on my car because you will happen upon a tech inspector at some race and he will say you cant race without it...then you gotta try to install it at the track … bummer.
I also installed it after looking at some pictures online of the results of a bad trans explosion...pretty scary.
Make it fit.... Just pull the ballistic packing that is inside of the nylon bag out of the way where it needs to get past the collector and the trans pan and then just PULL IT THRU.
I had a similar problem with mine. All it did was melt the nylon bag where it touched the header. It stunk up the place for a while and I certainly couldn't sell it for new now... but... the blanket is in place.
I bought some addition nylon strapping material to tighten the blanket better around the tranny.
I dropped the transmission cross member so I could lower the tranny to make room for the blanket to wrap around the tranny. A heck of a lot easier that trying to pull it over the top of the trans where you have very little room. Also with the tranny lowered somewhat you can message the blanket into place easier.
I did have to kind of "re-route" the lines that came out of the tranny and then went up to the tranny cooler. I used steel braided line with some steel line to braided line adapters to accomplish the transition.
Every think works fine. Been on for about 2 years now.
Note: you can see where my blanket had been burned on the bottom right corner by my header … no big deal. I had the blanket off when I replaced my old transmission with my new A&A Trans Brake Tranny.

Also, If you don't have it I would install a steel billet slip yoke with the big u-joint coming out of the trans. My Dana already had a steel billet yoke in the rear.

I do not run a blanket, but have both the billet steel front drum, and the A&A Ultimate Sprag with the extra rollers.

I bought a universal blanket from jegs, but have yet to install it. I'm using a non low band apply valve body, without any good parts in it(that i know of). I think its pretty important in my situation. My car has already had trans parts come thru the floor, but long prior to my ownership.
And THANKS mike ,for the install tips!

Had a blanket rolled up in the trunk for years! When tech asked me if I had a blanket in the car I said YES,I would never lie to a tech inspector.
When I broke into the 9's I installed the carbon sheild.

where did you get your shield and how much was it

Gary, I like Mike says, seeing the carnage left over when a torqueflite comes apart, you will be a believer. You are correct the blanket might add a little heat and they are a bastard to install but it beats the hell outta nothing. I have used the CSR composite shield for years. Just my thoughts..:blah:

I like the shield better too

but you have the blanket
use it
they suck but not as much as an explosion
& parts coming thru the floor

(rear band apply & bolt in sprag/overrunning clutch were smart additions too)

maybe fix the header from touching the trans
& install the blanket when you have the header off

kill 2 birds, with one frustrating day of work

Do you run a deep pan on your transmission? If you do, that Jegs blanket will barely reach around. I have a Jegs one, it's probably the same as yours and I added a few inches onto the straps

Get the shield. Good protection, but I've seen those cracked, as well. When it's catastrophic.......it's a bomb. I have a ATI-400 for my next serious build.

I have run blankets before and have had them melt due to too close to header tolerances. I have a shield now but did have to raise my trans tunnel slightly all around to clear.

Wow.... that’s exactly what I don’t want, Hemiman426. I’ll definately find a way to get the blanket up there. The plan will likely involve grinding back the edge of my B&M aluminum pan rail (not crazy about this) and using heat-wrap at the header collector. Then just squeezing the blanket in there and accepting the heat damage to the blanket that will undoubtedly ensue.
I don’t have the budget, nor desire to replace the headers, so my perfectly fine Hooker Comps will stay in use.

Option B). Has anyone ever taken a blanket, and instead of strapping it to the transmission, using rivets to fasten it to the floor / tunnel? What do you guys think of this?

I have used heat, ratchet straps, and floor jacks to move the collectors where i wanted them ,on a couple of sets of headers. If you dont have an h or x pipe, i would just see if i could pull the collector into a different place. My ancient hooker adjustables had collectors pointed downish and at funny angles, and my custom headers for my cortina fit ok, till i changed to heads with a higher exhaust port. Squeezed the tina headers with a ratchet strap, lifted the hookers with a floor jack.
