For the past couple years, I've been thinking about traveling the country with Submit a little bit at a time once I pack in the daily grind. Until recently, I've been thinking of a motorhome & drag a car behind, but more recently, I'm thinking about getting a travel trailer.

Those in the know, how about some opinions. Also, what's the longest you've gone out in one?

A month in the motorhome.. then it's time to go home!

Please stay in the SLOW LANE!!! Those motor home's are in the way on the interstate. And it never fails, it's a senior citizen behind the wheel, totally oblivious to life.

LOL.. trust me I never hold anyone up with my lead foot, and if I have to run slow I'll run the shoulder so everyone can get by.

I love the a-hole in the 60 foot monster home pulling an SUV, riding the middle lane 10 mph below the speed limit.
We won't even talk about them not needing a CDL!!!

What pisses me off, is the Aholes that don't get the concept of passing when I am running the shoulder and then when a guard rail comes along THAT's when they decide to pull up along side! LOL

Travel trailers are nice but a Motorhome "Pusher" is the way to go. You can drag a car behind, and everyone with you is
in the same space. A travel trailer is a $50,000.00 power unit and a $50,000.00 trailer that no one can be in while pulling it
and states are starting to require Chauffer's licenses to operate them. A friend of mine has a 39 foot Alfa Toyhouse that has
a garage in the back for the toys. That's the only reason I can think of to pull a trailer. And by some of the comments on this thread, Get a Big Enough Motor!

You don't have to worry about that with me, I am on the hammer!!!

The wife and I love the travel trailer. We go out a week at a time but could go much longer. Bought a Honda 3000is that will run everything if needed. Many State Partks places do a a length limit so we kept ours at 24 feet. We do like having the Durango to go out and explore the area we are at but did not want the expense of maintaining another vehicle so that is the reason we went with a trailer.

I would want to pick my landing spots and spend at least a month. I think that would make it feel more like a home as far as shower, laundry, etc.
I was a Traveler and I would be in towns without knowing a soul. Non-work hours, I would travel looking for local museums and interesting places. Every town has at least one. Some, it was the one Bar in town.

We are thinking of getting some sort of RV soon too. Friends of ours started with a trailer and now they say a motor home is the only way to go. Mostly because passengers can go to the bathroom, make a real snack, watch tv etc while you’re driving. With a trailer you’re just stuck in a pickup truck (assuming it’s a 5th wheel).

They go to RV parks mostly and just bring a golf cart.

Just remember RC.. cruise control isn't so you can leave the drivers seat and go grab another beer out of the fridge! That's what Submit is along for...

As far as Travel we have gone away for 7 days at a time and use a camper. We bought a new one about 4 years ago. We love it. It's very roomy inside. We like it cause you don't have all the expenses of another vehicle with all the maintenance involved with something like a Motorhome. We can unhook it and go wherever we want in our tow vehicle. Hopefully this year will be better for camping as last year the rain ruined plenty of times we wanted to get away...

We started with pop-up trailers long ago. Went to a travel trailer, then went to fifth wheels, I think we had about 6 different ones. It made sense to have a trailer while we were working, there's less maintenance and I already had a p/u truck. Of course, as I got bigger f/w's, had to get a bigger truck. As far as trailers go, I would only have a f/w. In my opinion, they pull a lot better and less trouble hooking up.
When my wife and I retired, she wanted a motor home, so we now own one. Each camper has good and not so good points to consider. We went from Florida to Alaska with a fifth wheel and were on the road for 3 months. We did almost the same trip in the motor home two years ago. I guess it has a lot to do with what you are already driving or what you're willing to spend in changing.

We like having a travel trailer. As QuickBpBp said, we unhook and the tow vehicle is our transportation. For me, having all of that drivetrain tied up in motorhome while you aren't using it is sort of a waste. Our tow vehicle is my daily driver ('01 Ram), so it gets plenty of non camping use.

There are a lot of upsides to a motorhome, though - as mentioned in the other posts.

What you say above is how I feel, which makes me think of the trailer route. It seems that all the affordable motorhomes are powered by a Ford V10 & the diesel pushers are a huge jump in price & size. I imagine that a V10 equipped motorhome pulling a vehicle is going to have the acceleration of a fully loaded '78 4-banger Pinto. Why they don't use a Powerstroke or Cummins diesel baffles me?

What I envision us doing is using a campsite as a base & then traveling the area to see what sites are around, and them move onto another location. Is this what others do?

Lastly, if being out on the road for a month is long enough, is the motorhome/trailer route worth it, or just fly to a destination, rent a car and stay in hotels for a couple weeks?

Nothing like a big rig hauling a big piece of Yellow equipment! KW, Peterbilt, IH (now Navistar), and how about the glory days...Mack! Sadly, I think most of these are now foreign-owned.

Yeah it’s a toss up. We currently have like 3 weeks of timeshares that we trade all over the country. So 3 weeks of vacation only costs us a few hundred a year. We just drive and put together some sight seeing road trips on the way to the resort.

This is the only reason we haven’t pulled the trigger on the RV yet.

If it is a motor home, make sure its a diesel!
And make sure you have an extra set of fuel filters at all times.
