I peruse CL quite a bit and have had some terrific scores. This one is still bothering me a little.

On October 2nd I replied to an ad for 4- FREE- mopar slotted rims. The person with the rims contacted me back within an hour both by text and email. He informed me that his son would be at the house by 5pm to meet me. Then he said the rims were $50. I informed him that his ad stated free both in the heading and in the body of the ad. he says "ok" I am out of town and will contact you when I am home. He said he was unaware that his son had posted them for free. I text him on the 5th to see if there was a good time during the weekend when I could come out. He said he had removed the ad and thought that maybe he would use them on a roller. If he changed his mind he would let me know, since I had inquired about them first, I would be the first person he contacted. I texted back OK, let me know what you finally decide.

Two things bother me about the whole deal (I know, I know....craigslist)
1. My thinking is that since he agreed to my inquiry to come and get the wheels for free as were advertised. His change of heart constitutes a breach of service.
2. If I had just ponied up the $50 bucks, they would be in my garage, problem solved.

$50 bucks isn't much these days, but its the damn principle of it. free means free.
So, I am a tad upset with him and also myself.

Oh well, just wanted to get it off my chest. I hope you all get some entertainment out of it !

Oh, believe me I have heard of some crazy ones. Mine is about the mildest type.

$50 is about scrap price, maybe less. I'm planning a series of aluminum castings and will be buying any and all wheels for $10 or less.
I'd feel better after venting and try again to buy them if they would add value to my car or look cool or different for a while. While there, you get to ask: "Have any other Mopar stuff to sell?"

He has quite a bit of mopar stuff he is selling in a different post. I looked through it because it is mopar stuff. I did tell him I was interested in some of his other stuff. I didnt see the rims listed, so who knows. I did text him this afternoon. We will see.

yeah you know you shoulda just ponied up the 50 bucks :poke:
he even told you that he didnt know his son had posted them free and he told ya he wanted 50.
hope it does work out for you.
ps,im looking for a 8-1/4 rear with some 323s if you see any, from a car.

would it be worth it to buy a palletload of them?
i have i think around 40 or more truck/car alums.

I think you're being unreasonable. Mistakes happen all the time - in this case his son posting the ad as "free". There are ads on CL all the time with incorrect pricing. I doubt even a Harvard lawyer would win a case against thi. Hell, I bet there are members here who post **** on CL with stupid prices like $12345 and these clearly are NOT typos or mistakes !! If you really want something for "free", go outside and take a deep breath of air, that's about as "free" as you're gonna get.

Most nothing is free in life unless its a friend giving you something that they no longer want or its a present.
Sure the seller is a dope and as a rule I dont deal with these types of people, as it never turns out well

I don't think I am being unreasonable. It is not like I am going after him. I have better things to do. If he doesn't respond...oh, well.
But think about this...
...for his son to make changes to his ad, he would have to be logged in to either his fathers computer or CL account. The word FREE would have been typed intentionally, not like someone fat fingering the numerals. I am not going to make a case out of this, kay sera sera (sp). Nothing gained, nothing lost. It was just that he honored the ad but then switched. Also in his ad, he said that if nobody wanted them he was going to junk them. So he clearly wanted them gone.
I was just sharing and kicking myself in the rear at the same time. I know that I should have been happy at $50, but they were listed for free. That is my only gripe.

I am actually making sport of myself with this post :) (because really...who is the dumbass ? Good guess, it is me...lol)

I post stuff for free all the time to get the crap out of my way!
Your not being unreasonable , but it is there stuff if he changed his mind or whatever happened nothing you can do about it . $50 isn't bad for a set of rims

Yeah lots of CL buyers and seller D Bags. I posted a Snap-on scope on CL and stated cash only. Got half dozen buyers wanting to meet the price if I would take a Certified Bank check. Scammers!!

WTF ? A guy places an ad to give something away then changed his mind?
How rude. What a jerkoff. I agree that if they were originally priced at $50 or whatever a fair price is, it would be a different matter entirely. To change the terms after the ad was placed is a shitty, gutless move by a loser with no integrity.

Try not to lose any sleep over this deal. CL is well known for it ripoff artists. I don’t think this is one of them. You could have really been set up but in the big scheme of things not a big deal. Count your blessings.

I problem was opposite, I posted free and everyone e mailed me -how much is it. :BangHead:

Yeah, his son my ***. He tried to pull the 'ol bait & switch and you called him on it. Good for you. The guys on here saying 'you should've gave him the $50 anyway', bullcrap. The reason there is so many liars and scammers especially on craigs is because people are pushovers and let them get away with it. The fact you then got the runaround, and then to have him go from 'if nobody wants them they're trash' to 'oh nevermind I think I'm gonna use them'...?
Screw 'em. I wouldn't give him 50 cents..

no,you kerndog and bean are right.
i apologize, but i didnt have all the facts.
i will point out you shoulda shared that part earlier,
about him saying he would junk them if no interest.
because that changes everything, now it totally looks like they bait n switched.
id still probably proceed like you are,
but beware paying large for anything mechanical/valuable that you cant test on the spot.....

Sounds like it was a "Fishing Exhibition" to me.

There's some real nut jobs out there along with the scammers. If it doesn't happen smoothly without any glitches, walk away.

You probably got lucky. Forget about it.

I post **** on CL all the time for free as well. i take the stuff out to the street then list it. no phone number, no email address, only a home address with the words , AT THE CURB , GET IT WHILE ITS HOT.
I watch out the window and see how long it takes to disappear. then I delete the add. I've even done this with parts car carcasses.
I don't see why giving stuff away has to be so complicated

I think they have a "Curb Alert" section. It's for leftover yard sale items that they want to give away.
