The reason it's based on the BMW Z4 is because Toyota wanted to keep the traditional I6 engine that their Supra used to have...except that Toyota no longer makes such an engine. So the BMW I6 was the way to go. It's no slouch, Car & Driver tested one and got low 12 second quarters with 3.8 second 0-60 times. (Unfortunately, the Supra is also available with the Z4 I4 engine).
