Fiberglass Fenders from Sled City

My winter project arrived from Sled City. Well I actually drove down and picked them up. Fiberglass front fenders for my 62 Dodge Dart. They are very well constructed. Nice and sturdy.

Larry at SCF is a great guy to deal with. He has some great stories too!

I will have my old fenders for sale after the swap. They are very nice. No dents.

I love it when people come in and pick up their fiberglass. I get to meet some really great racers. I have had people come in from St. Louis, Canada, Conniticutt, Florida, New York , a bunch from Detroit and Mich. areas, New Jersey, Virginia and even Sweeden. I show them around and they look at the crap I have sitting around and we laugh a lot. We also do a fair amount of bench racing too. @Frank Mopar , do you have other glass on your car? I've got a 62 savoy so, like you, sled city is the choice. I am contemplating a pair of bumpers and a glass hood for mine, just wondering what the balance of weight saving verses cost is.
If i remember right, my steel hood is around 75 lbs, bumpers around 25-30 each.

i have glass hood and trunk. One person can easily lift then off no problem. Front and rear bumpers you can hold with one finger. Ill have to weigh them when I get a chance.

Edit, i remember hearing that the factory fenders were fairly light. I remember seeing a 62 fury hdtp at the local strip many years ago that had some glass on it, but it was clearly home-made. I agree, sled city is the only one helping us out with 62 parts.

10lbs. of weight reduction for $1000.00 is crazy. The trunk lid is heavy. That's the best bang for your buck imo.

I bought a glass pin on deck lid for my 66 Coronet from Sled City. Quality was great but the whole idea backfired.
I was looking for a big weight reduction which the glass deck lid accomplished...but....
when I made my first pass with the 70lb (or so) weight reduction off the rear of the car I just blew the tires off the car. The car just spun and went nowhere.
I ended up trying everything with shocks, launch rpm, etc, etc, to no avail. I ended up putting 70lbs of ballast back into the trunk to get the car back where it was.....wasted several hundred dollars.

I pulled 86lbs. of batteries out of my trunk, added 1 braille lithium battery which weighs 7.5lbs. readjusted my ladder bars, put 2 clicks in my shocks and picked almost a .1 and 2 mph. My plan is a AAR rear decklid after I get the new combo sorted out.

The beauty about removing overall weight from a door car is that you can manage weight placement anywhere the car needs it. Sometimes all a car needs is a certain amount of ballast on one side, sometimes both sides of the rear end area. I've got an encyclopedia list of weight reduction tricks on the first half of my car, but the rear deck and bumper are factory steel.
Still at it with the weight numbers game in what I call arithme-tricks.

I would imagine 62 hoods and deck lids are similar to 64 parts. 64 Belvedere hood and deck are about 55 lbs each. Hood hinges are 11lbs for the pair. Stock bumpers were 23F, 25R bumper, brackets 25lbs for all 4. To me the glass fenders weren't light enough to be worth while. Lexan windows with no regulators is good. Removing the regulators, the side windows and rear window saved 90lbs. Side windows go up and down with a strap. Fixed windows could save even more. Vent assys are 11lbs each.

The weight number I put up were the actual weight of the parts, not the weight savings (except the front fenders)

You have remember these cars are long so anything weight off the very front of the car is huge.

I have lexan side glass and the doors are completely gutted.

Next step for me is to look at replacing the windshield with new glass. I think new aftermarket glass is lighter then old factory glass. Anyone know what an original windshield weighs?

As FMJ said said, its about where you can move it to.

We put an aftermarket windshield in my sons 62 from Summit Racing. Weighed exactly the same as the old one. My 64 wasnt any thinner either. No way a 62 hood is 75lbs.

OK. Well that saves me money. Thanks Doug.

On another note I stay away from Lexan windshield because they tend to fog up rather quickly.
