Which do you guys prefer-? 100 stock restoration or the “day 2” look

Depends on the car. Nice, uncut cherry car I personally prefer it to look stock. Doesn’t have to be a pain in the butt chalk marks, assembly line finger prints resto, just look stock.
Non numbers matching, or rust bucket, or anything else, make it what you like.
And just for the record, day two means day two in the sixties or seventies. No part of that includes gangsta rapper rims and elastic band tires.

***edit- oh yeah, if you do change anything be sure to hide your fender tag in a safe place. There will always be the douchebag fender tag nazis that are quick to dismiss your work because you changed some thing listed on the tag. Always.

I agree it depends on the car to a degree but personally I prefer day 2 hot rods over stock but actually prefer restomod overall.

IMO if it is a rare or somewhat rare all original car, with original drivetrain, I restore it to as stock appearing as possible. About the only modification I would like is upgraded wheels and tires. In non-apearance items engine upgrades and axle ratios for performance or reliability are good.
On non-original cars make it what you want. I do try to make the cars in this class appeal to others as well as myself.

Day two is my era.
Internal engine mods, scoop if factory type.
wheels, Tires.gears & exhaust.
All okay with me

I have been a day 2 guy since the 60's. Can't help it. I guess it's the gear head in me.

Day 2 all the way.
Only in very special circumstances would I consider a factory restoration. HEMI car, Wing car, AAR, A12 car, etc..... (and even then, it would end up warmed up in some fashion).

Run of the mill cars like bees, RR’s, GTX’s, etc... would get Day 2 mods.

As has already been said, “Day 2” means period correct and tastefully done. No clown cars for me.

The thing with OE stuff is that it’s boring and rarely gets used as intended. Fairly certain the intent with these cars wasn’t to push them on and off trailers and sit behind them in lawn chairs under tents.

In the “day 2” theme, I had the class win decals that were on my car when found reproduced and installed them on an original rear window.
I thought it would be cool to replicate the history of the car, while keeping the original window unmolested.

The window hanging on the wall is the original window from my car with the weathered drag strip decals.

Drive off the Dealer's lot and down to the Local Speed Shop. Day 2 for me.
Opps, I misread the question, 100% Restoration or Day 2? Well if I did a 100% restoration, I'd hate to pay $8,000. 00 +/- on a paint job and then still want the assembly line paint runs or the wrong ''Jacking Procedure'' sticker in my trunk. Just what is a 100% Restoration?
I'm just stuck on Day 2 probably because I grew up around Day 2 cars. There were probably more Day 2's around the neighborhood in my car's early life. It seemed like every four block radius had one or two motor heads wrenching on these beasts trying to get ready for the weekend on the city streets or one of the local tracks.

I do appreciate seeing the 100% Restored cars and a big Thank You to the people that have that special love for these.

My car’s Hemi is long gone-so it won’t be matching numbers - so not sure which way to go with the extras- either headers or manifolds, keystones or stock wheels , etc

Not that Day 2 will affect the restoration until I get to near the end

Make it yours! If it were mine, if I could live with the original color combo I would do that as well as the Hemi and whatever transmission and rear
it had. Also IMO a Hemi has to have 2 4bbls and the chrome dome on a 67. Cam, lifters, cubic inches, gear ratios, wheels, tires, exhaust, options, do it your way and drive the wheels off it.

What car are you working on? I did some mods to my Satellite but going to pure stock except ignition.. I've removed non original parts, Dana 60, manual valve body, crossram and big tires. I want to have it stock, could be up for sale in a few years. Non-Numbers matching is a deal breaker for some not for others.
I say build it your way the only but is do mods that can be undone.

This is just a "For Instance" A few years ago we sold my brothers 70 SS 454 450 horse 4 speed Chevelle when he passed away.
It was a day 2 car since new. Intake, carb, Hooker headers, Lakewood scattershield. Hurst shifter, etc.
My brother seldom drove the car.In 6 years it only racked up 1600 miles. The Pa state inspection sticker was 1976, that's when it was parked till 2017.Why ? I don't know that's just his thing. It was a "When I get around to it car".
But what I'm getting at is the car was sold by word-of-mouth only and in the condition as seen in these photos fetched $90K.
So did it loose value because of being a day 2 car ? Maybe but we were looking at auction results and restored similar Chevelles were only in the $100K to $120 is range.

67 GTX"s fairly rare, don't have production off hand. mymopar.com doesn't have production numbers for 66/67.
67 had the lowest street hemi production numbers.

Fran - I think '71 was lower than '67. '67 was second lowest. Interesting that '66 was the highest. Must have been a lot of dealer ordered street Hemis in '66 that were sold off the lot.

As for the original question, I like both original and day 2. And I agree with no rubberband tires, crapper rims or clown cars!:moparsmiley:

I am going through this right now..Car was built to look factory stock with that sleeper image...In January I started going over it to make it how I really want it..15"x7" steel rear rims with J-60-15 M&H d.o.t. bias, aftermarket axles with long studs, skinny Cragars up front with 7.75 bias plus a cpp disc brake conversion.Car has a working in dash tach but I installed a rebuilt dixco stars and stripes, sun blue line oil pressure gauge and a black grant 500 wheel....now I have the day 2 look I grew up with..

Can't disagree been a long time since I cared. (Except my car of course:D:rolleyes:) Think, maybe looking at GTX figures and confused with total production . They don't 66 Satellite convertibles? Guess because no breakdown on transmissions.

i like the day 2 look if it is done right. My '65 is done in that style.
