Did you lend tools and never get it back?

Loaned out my Sawzall to the neighbor to take up north. That was 3 years ago and still has not brought it back. Then he has the balls to ask me last year if I had any more blades.......what a dick.....he bent the 6 blades that I had in the case. The wife blew up at him one day this past spring and told him to **** off:upyours:, needless to say I got a new sawzall and case:D

Hey, we all want to be able to trust one another and sometimes, we can....
just not with tools, that's all. :D

I only have one friend I ever loan **** too.... because he takes better care of the **** than me at times. And even BIGger more hi-dollar stuff. Anybody else... HELL NO Its like in my shop... one of my knuckleheads "borrows" a socket... ya they put it back.... CRACKED... nice...... NOT

I used to lend AND borrow tools quite a bit when I was not in a position to afford everything myself. I did find that often my stuff would come back either broken or dirty - covered in paint...or needing a service etc. I also discovered that when I borrowed some items, they were at the point of breaking down anyway...and would invariably either break, or be useless. Then returning the tools became difficult because of that damage which I wasn't responsible for.

Nowadays, I prefer to just go and buy what I need...even if it only gets one use. My wife is always commenting slyly about how "I see you have another new tool" :D I look at tools as an investment in my career and ability to do home improvements to save costs.....at least that's what I tell myself.

On a slightly different note....I have in my garage right now, a petrol (gasoline) generator which I am repairing for a friend of a friend. He loaned it to another guy, who used it on his river bach. The guy managed to tip it over while taking the boat trip...smashed the voltmeter, and effectively stopped the ability to output any power. Long story short - I will get the generator working, but will likely only be paid in beer as a result.
I'm thinking it's about a 10-dozen job. :drinks:

The last thing I loaned out more because of injury to my hands was a friend needing my mig to finish off. His 60 Ventura. This was a few years ago. Figuring he could use it to complete the task. Well. Apparently he found another guy to complete the job. A year goes by. I say well its about time I collect my mig back finding out he was restoring his brothers Mini cooper using my Mig Gas wire. But the Ventura was completed. He was telling me he needed it for a while longer. I told him to go buy a Mig. Wire , and a contract for the argon. And **** off. That was the last time I loaned out anything. Just when you think your helping out. There trying to bend you over at the same time. I learned from this.

Somewhere out there are my cherry picker and two engine stands. Loan them to friends and they loaned them to friends and so on and so on. Don't look to get any of that back, I'm done building cars. Borrowed a trailer from a friend to build a house at the lake. He told me to keep it till I was done. He didn't really have a place to keep it. I had it three months and before I brought it back, I put new tires on it and had it painted. He offered to sell it to at the beginning for less than I put into it, I had no place to park it long term. My old neighbors called me Mr home depot, I had everything! Yes, I loaned stuff to all of them, but they knew to bring it back. When I moved I gave thousands of dollars worth of tools away to an old friend of my sons. They would have been my sons, now they're his. At my new house the neighbors don't know what I have, although they saw my garage full of shop tools, I say nothing!!

Grandkids and son-in-laws, need I say more...

As a matter of fact, yes they are or should I say they were!!! LOL. Keep them, hell if they made that far, they're yours!!

I've got a couple..possibly three good friends that I trust with my tool and can rely on not to abuse them. Even then I won't lend welding equipment (gas, mig or arc to anyone.....although I'm not sure why anyone would ever want to borrow my ancient buzzbox 140 amp arc!). The three I do lend to also have a good selection of specialist tools....that I might not be able to use it I stopped lending them stuff!

I have an engine/front suspension install stand that I loaned someone and they used it many times in their shop on other peoples jobs. After a few years of free use I told them I needed to use it at home on my convertible. I heard about how much of a problem it was going to be for me to take it and if I could wait for a couple weeks. I rescheduled my project and then they didn't use it after-all. I ended up making them a cheaper version of an install stand so I could keep mine. It will never leave my shop again.

What's the saying...never a borrower or lender be..?

And then there's fool me once, shame on you...

Am having this conversation with Ulli and cranky about this topic in other tread, I borrow my air compressor to the husband of one of my wife's niece, and six months later and nothing, already ask the mooch to return my tool and he just play fooled, I hate lend tools to other people simply because they don't know how to use it properly, all of us have seen how people use a lever in a ratchet tool, let's hear your horror story's about this.

Now that’s something I’ve done too many times. I’ve loaned money to a close friend or in-law. Never ends well. I’ve since closed the bank. It ends up like tools with hard feelings and with money can be messy. Won’t do it again for anyone unless I’m just gifting it to a relative. No more money lending.

I loaned a few engine building tools, ridge reamer, ring compressor, hone, gaping tool, ect to my former father-in-law and when I asked for them back he replied with "You're crazy they are my tools. You can borrow them if you need to." I tried to refresh his memory but I had no luck. He kept insisting that they were his. To keep peace in the family I let it go.

I don't lend tools. If you need it bad enough stop by with your car or part and we'll do it right here. I've lost way too many tools lending them out.

@coronet68mx Stop by his house with a couple of your buddies and take it back. The longer you let it go the more there is a chance that it might just disappear. I've seen it before.
Why didn't you just 'borrow' them as he suggested. Then hold on to them.
