"Occasional" Nitrous 150-300HP...What do Engine Builders/Nitrous Racers do to prep a build?

I rattled a lash cap off at 8000rpm when the u-joint broke as 2nd gear hit. Valve hit the piston. It took out a rod bearing. Nitrous on this particular combo is going to be like that on every pass. Carnage is highly likely.

my last stick go around. Sheered the teeth off second gear. I had a 7200 chip in the MSD and the tell tale still ended up on7800. It would have been bad had I left my right foot planted all the way through the gear change. Luckily the trans and the Detroit Locker (Figured that out later) were the only things I broke that outing. That was 700hp @ 3800#s and a soft loc. Gotta have a hoist, trans jack, a lot of time/motivation, and some extra coin to party with the clutch pedal on a big motor. Add nitrous and holy chit!! The guys who make fast repeatable passes in a 9-10 sec stick cars are good mechanics and spend a ton of time working on their combos to get them sorted out. And there’s always trial and error, broken parts, and lots of money spent to get there.

1/4 Mile Trap Speed : 140
1/4 Mile Trap RPM : 6,876
That RPM is one reason why I think a 4.25 stroke is plenty, although a 4.50 will work without any clearancing per BME. I don't want to reach for 5th in a 1320, and I do have some tire diameter to play with. I like the 4.10 though.
Anyway, I will have to have a roll cage to run at the track, and US Car Tools is on "the list" for frame ties and so forth. It's already boxed as it's a V-code.
Thanks guys, even the "harbingers of doom".
I'm going to keep the nitrous "easy" say 100-150 shot, IF I ever get there.

This is a 9 sec pass in a nitrous stick car. Pretty damn impressive.

Holy ****!!
I think I'm "busy" now piloting the RR down the 1320, that run was like being thrown into a blender and having to stay facing the same direction!

I don't think we are "harbingers of doom" so much as perhaps had a bit more experience with N20.....

My 1 and only 9 sec pass with a 175 big shot hit on the 440 727 '69 Cuda was something else, car had a 4800 stall and 4.88 gears, hit it off the line and I just managed to catch the 2nd gear shift as the tach was going past 7300rpm almost instantly, the car trapped@7500 which for a stock 6-pk bottom end wasn't the best, went from 125mph na to 134....Having a Big bore and shorter stroke as you have is a good combo, rpm still talks the talk.

I will admit to not reading through all the text in this thread.....to be honest i tend to skip over the posts with walls of text!!...but i had a 100 shot on this...
gto.JPG

...and a 40 shot on this....I built this bike ...ground up...even made the underseat pipes....as stock they are low level...one each side.
100_1178.jpg

....both were pretty much stock engines and never gave a moment problem in the time I had them. The nitrous chills everything it touches on the way in..so that helps. Might have missed it above but the other thing you need to check is 100 percent is the ignition system. N2O (not NOS...thats a brand name!)is really hard on the ignition system and the plugs. You need a good fat spark to get a clean burn and the timing spot on if you dont like the idea of perforated pistons!! The bike was great fun on the street but lethal in the wet. Its only about 100 horse to start with so adding another 40 % when you hit the button (the converted headlight flasher in my case) was hilarious!..... would just lift the front of the floor if you were not tight against the tank!!...no matter what gear you were in...LOL.

It's all in good fun, because some posts make it sound like no one ever raced
6XX-700 horsepower engines in front of manual transmissions without scattering parts all over the track every run. :D
Please! No one take that the wrong way! I greatly appreciate your advice!
Ultimately I'm going to discuss this with the BUILDER for my stroker, and on a side note, this thread served as a reminder to make sure my engine can spin up to enough RPMs to cross the line in FOURTH gear of my FIVE speed, and I have to take into account the faster MPH and how many RPMs that may translate into.
I'd rather keep my 4.10 ring and pinion gearset, and get a TALLER tire to make it work. Although I don't have a RPM power range yet, one of the reasons I'm going as big of displacement as I am at the modest HP/TQ #s I'm looking for, is so I don't have to have really high spring pressures and a valvetrain I have to dick around with every month.

I other words you're completely closed minded
to actually learning something
from someone that's, actually been there & done that
someone tries to actually help someone else,
people that share their knowledge
with someone else, with actually what they are working on
actual pertinent information, not personal
no matter how frustrating, dealing with answers & questions may be
aiding to the long drawn out posts, lots of information to do a 1 liner quip...

Some of US don't mind spending the time to help others
not just post something of theirs, actually contribute to the discussion
or helping them sort out the problems/or future plans

no matter how frustrating it can be, to deal with or type it out
or how long of a post it needs to be, to get the point & information across...

& it still isn't enough information

You have a good day...

Fortunately for me, there are a number of forum members like you, Budnicks, who put up with my long, :blah: drawn out :blah:"plans" that start as "dreams" or "ideas" or sometimes just a brain fart...:realcrazy::carrot:
Like I said, because of members who are patient, especially patient in the Racers Forum (because this forum seems to be for the more hardcore, straight to the facts kind of posts) y'all have really helped me out a LOT, even thinking of stuff I may have overlooked that's not directly the question or topic asked.
Hey! When these things come to be, like some are about to (I bring my RR to the shop tomorrow, FINALLY, should have been in February!) you are all welcome to celebrate with me, or if I break something that you said I would and I didn't listen you can :poke::drama:

I am the Harbinger of Dooooooommmmm...hear me when I say you cannot race that without scattering parts from the start to the finish... muhhh haaa haaa haaaaa. LOL. If nothing else, your threads are great entertainment!! Harbinger of doom. Where do you come up with this stuff?? I was laughing at that one for sure!

sorry Biomed, that above post
it wasn't intended or meant to be a swipe at you :luvplace:

It was just a clarification to the "unwilling", other party... :blah::blah::blah:

Oh, I got that from the get go...
I used it as an opportunity to thank you and the rest of "the family" for all of your help.
I found alphitalias post...entertaining.
Funny he mentioned a 40 shot on that cool motorcycle. I considered a Boss Nos system for my H-D V-Rod, in a 40 HP shot, but so many toys, so little time and money...
Besides, while I still enjoy riding my V-Rod, I learned at No Problem Raceway that I wasn't comfortable squeezing more speed out of the launch on 2 wheels. I spun around 180° w/in 2 bike lengths and almost dropped it, and then I knew that I wouldn't be the one to get all that bike had to offer on a drag strip.

Personally I would not run any Nitrous with a 6 pack plate system. Those intakes are hard to get to flow evenly to all 8 Cylinders let alone adding nitrous to those lean cylinders and sometimes fat cylinders... Unless you really have that intake done right... Secondly I hope you and your trans can shift smooth and like lightning otherwise there will be some carnage.... If this is a new engine and is putting out more than you ever drove I would suggest seat time for sure before trying to add nitrous to it... Just my opinion...

Just my 2 cents, you're going to have a vary powerful set up even without nitrous. If you have to do it stick to a 100 to 150 HP system which is activated by steering wheel mounted button. Get a adjustable nitrous controller. Don't engage the nitrous for longer then 6 seconds. Till you get comfortable with the car's power stick to just using the system in 4th gear. Or, if your bank account is a bottomless pit and you enjoy pulling engines and replacing pistons go with the 300 HP kit.:thumbsup::drinks:

I agree with using a 100-150 shot, ramped in, only in 3rd or 4th, etc.
The reason for the thread is since I'm going to be discussing the build parameters w/the builder soon, I wanted feedback from you all.
On another note, I'm probably (EDIT: NOT YET) going to go to a dual disc clutch and pressure plate system since I'm having the throwout bearing replaced with a Hydramax TO bearing, and the HitMaster launch control system installed. I'm thinking (and getting some info from those who have dual disc) that would be better to handle the friction that the HitMaster will impart.
I've got some calls to make.
Thanks guys!

Lots of great info here. But to recap, you want a 3800# big bore stroker, with a 6pack, with nitrous, with a stick, with a clutch control, and run nines? You've raced before? Or is this just a jump-in with all 8 feet type deal. You'll be working harder than Lars Ulhrich on the skins

And that 9 sec clutch car I don't believe weighted 3900#? Looked more like 2900#? I wouldn't screw with nitrous on a big motor. To get 150-250 more horse from a big cube motor is quite a shot. It's better to build for it. JMO. besides, you have to then mess with ignition timing. Typically retarded to give valve timing a chance to catch up. And guess what that means? Runs choppy at idle. If you have a true solid N/A 800+ horse? Be happy you don't kill yourself at WOT. Because it will find a weak part and kill that.

Like AC/DC said, "It's harder than it looks!"
