Can you provide more info? Did you just acquire the car? Was it driven with out the throttle pressure rod installed (good way to fry the clutches)? Shifter properly adjusted? You can pull the pan and look for sludge. Does the fluid stink?

i just acquired the car..its been sitting in a garage most of the time..but yes it has been driven without the pressure rod but i dont know how much..it will go in all other gears .the fluid at the dipstick looks ok and smells ok but someone may had already changed it and cleaned it . i will try to get the pan off and look further. what is the procedure to check and adjust shifter?

Hook up the throttle lever first!

it is attached to a 426 max wedge race engine ,if it was raced back in 64 would the trans be equipped with kick down linkage or did it use a specific trans??the car originally came with a 361 but i have or im suppose to have the original trans ,its sitting in the floor but looks identical to the one in the car....i sold the car minus engine ..i thought i would try to diagnose the trans problem before pulling the engine..thanks for the help..

could it be a manual shift valve body?

Here's some information anyone with a PB trans should have on how the gear selection is adjusted and discusses the kick down rod. If you have a FSM there is information in it about this. Typically if the shifter needs adjustment you find the car will move such as when in neutral or be in another gear such as in R when you're in N. Vital that the rod be installed correctly unless with this car there's a MVB.

read post # 6.. i use a manual forward shift valve body[ most use a revers pattern ] i make my on valve body's i must shift each gear . if you put mine in drive it will be in drive and so on . if you drive the car and shift from first to second then drive then let off gas and down shift from drive to second you should feel each gear down shifting to first only below 20 m.p.h dont want to over rev, the engine. if you dont feel a 2-1 down shift dont worry as long as when you are in first it pulls then engine braking will tell you all is good.

If 2nd gear doesnt engage the kick down/ forward band is not holding. It has nothing to do with clutches. The band could have been damaged if it was run without the linkage with a fully automatic valve body. The forward servo that applys this band is very robust. I doubt if it is damaged. You could check the band adjustment. But be careful. The adjustment is approximately 2 turns backed off from snug (72in/lbs). If you have to turn the adjuster in more than about 3 full turns the band material may be worn close to the metal. If it goes to metal it will seize the trans and destroy the drum. A lesson I learned in my early days of 727 building. I didnt listen to the guy who told me not to tighten it. It seized 50 miles from home.
