69GTX four speed ?

I stated the 3.31was a dana 53. I did not say that B bodies got the 3.31. I said that it was chryslers original intention. As stated my shop manual said the same thing. Data books and shop manuals are printed well in advance, and the info provided was what was thought to be true at the time of pri nting.

Can i like and agree at the same time. from 65 and up chrysler knew their new 440 inch motor needed more diff than the 383 variants. Then they put 440s in b bodies. Then they decided they needed more better diffs than the cbodies that they started the jeep/lincoln series with. so out comes a 60 in the muscle car war and the c's are stuck with the antiquicated 53.

You'll have a hard time killing an 8 3/4. God knows I've tried since '78 and my 741 is out of a '67 Charger..

It's funny, the 8.75 is Mopar's medium duty axle... It'll take more abuse that any Chevy 12 bolt, more abuse than 75% of the Ford 9" axles... Every guy I knew with a fast Buick, Olds or Pontiac back in the day always had a spare axle stashed in the back yard just in case.... I always had a couple spare 8.75's, not because I was worried about the 3.23's breaking but because in 30 minutes I could either have 3.91's or 2.76's

Chrysler knew from day 1 the 440 inch motor with a manual transmission needed more than an 8 3/4 differential. And never produced any without a Dana. Change my mind.

Chrysler knew that, but an awful lot of people have put 440's with 4 Spd's in cars with 8.75 axles that have lived for years taking serious abuse....

Chrysler engineers didn't like to cut corners, they had a reputation for well engineered cars & didn't take it lightly....

GM on the other hand had Muncie transmissions (With an aluminum case) in front of 427 & 454 engines...

Chrysler didn't send people out the door with junk, but if people wanted to build that ,,, thats on them. And it would work because Chrysler stuff was over built.

Interesting tidbit concerning a Dana rear axle. If you ordered your car with a 440 or hemi and wanted a 4 speed trans, then a Suregrip and the Dana rear was a mandatory option.
My 67 Charger window sticker shows the 4 speed transmission @ $188.05 and the Suregrip heavy duty differential @ $138.90 or total of $2514 in 2020 dollars.
And all hemi and 440 hp cars had heavy duty suspension and brakes added to the base cost of the car.
Performance was never cheap, back then or today.
