Well, I finally got the engine back in the car after refreshing with all new gaskets and painting it. I also installed a double roller timing chain. I was anxious to get it started to hear the new hooker headers. This entire day was spent on getting it running, no luck. In the beginning I had no spark and the pump was not pushing any fuel. After checking all wiring and adjusting the points I saw sparks at points and wires. The fuel pump was installed incorrectly and after adjusting it, pumped fuel to the filter and carb. I drained a battery trying to get it running now that I had fuel and spark. I made sure to be at top dead center while having the rotor pointing to the #1 cylinder. After rotating the distributor a bit, the best I got was loud explosion noises coming from the carburetor. Leads me to think that the timing is off but cannot figure out a systematic way to get it correct again. The car ran fine before removing the engine. Any suggestions are highly appreciated.
